D.R.E.A.M. (Montana) Down syndrome Research, Education and Advocacy in Montana

We are a diverse group of parents in the Gallatin Valley and surrounding areas with young children with Down syndrome. Initially, we connected to celebrate the joys and concerns that come with having a child with Down syndrome. Since then we have all realized the importance of having a network of friends and resources and wanted to reach out to others who may be in our same situation.

๐ŸŽ’ It is back-to-school season! Looking for a new way to manage your schedule, keep track of tasks, and stay organized this school year? Check out the list of visual schedule apps in our Resource Library!

๐Ÿ“… Visual schedules are effective tools for supporting independence and routine-building for people with and without Down syndrome. They help make daily tasks predictable and manageable.

๐Ÿ“ฑ While some people prefer paper calendars or schedules, others may want to use an app on their phone or tablet. The list in our Resource Library includes apps that can be used to create calendars, establish routines, set timers, write reminders, and more. See the link below to review the list!

It is hard to believe that summer break is ending, and many students will be returning to school in the next few weeks. As students prepare to reconnect with classmates, it may be helpful to review important social skills topics such as:
๐Ÿ’ฌ having conversations
๐Ÿ™…๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ respecting boundaries
๐Ÿ˜ก calming down when we are upset
๐Ÿ‘ฌ๐Ÿฟ being a good friend
โž• and more!

Check out the article linked below for a list of social skills visuals and videos on these topics!

๐Ÿ’งIt is important to stay hydrated throughout the year, especially during the hot summer months!๐Ÿ’ง

We encourage individuals with Down syndrome who come to our clinic to drink plenty of water because:
๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ It is good for our skin.
๐Ÿฆท It is good for our teeth.
๐Ÿšฝ It helps us go to the bathroom regularly.
๐Ÿ˜€ It helps us do our best at home, school, work, and other places!

Eating fruits and vegetables with high water content such as watermelon ๐Ÿ‰ and cucumbers ๐Ÿฅ’ is one way to increase water intake. Our online library has resources with additional tips for staying hydrated. They are available at the link below.
