Warmer days have began to arrive, which means the dreaded horse hair shedding season has begun. Shedding season calls for daily grooming! Use tools like rubber curry combs, shedding blades, or grooming blocks to remove winter hair—starting at the hindquarters works best. For quicker results, add regular baths, a balanced diet, and extra light (15–16 hours) to help trigger shedding.

Weighing your 4‑H animals is more than just numbers—it helps track growth, ensure proper nutrition, and confirm they meet show weight requirements. Regular weigh‑ins also help calculate average daily gain, dose medications accurately, and spot health issues early. For those without access to a scale at home, work with your local Extension Office to utilize options, such as the fairgrounds scale, local veterinarians, etc.

Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA), also known as Coggins’ disease or swamp fever, is a viral disease that is transmitted by flies and contaminated equipment. EIA is indicated by high fever, labored breathing, pounding heartbeat, and anemia. There is no treatment or vaccine for EIA, and once infected animals become carriers for life, there is a risk of infecting other horses. Infected horses must either be euthanized or isolated permanently. Prevention is done by identifying carriers of the disease through a Coggins test and never reusing needles.

Kim has stepped into a vital leadership role ensuring the continued success and growth of the knitting and crocheting project in Gallatin County. Despite having no prior 4-H background, and coming in as a knitter to a predominantly crochet-focused group, she embraced the challenge with enthusiasm. Kim quickly became the go-to project leader, thoughtfully providing patterns suited to all skill levels and fostering an inclusive, supportive learning environment for every member. One of her standout contributions has been helping establish a meaningful community service project in partnership with The Springs Memory Care residents, creating a powerful connection between 4-H members and the broader community. She has also played a key role in gathering supplies and donations, ensuring the project has the resources it needs to thrive.Kim’s positivity, strong communication, and genuine care for youth are evident in every interaction. She has brought stability, energy, and heart to a program that was once uncertain, and thanks to her efforts, it is now not only continuing, but flourishing.
