The American Avalanche Association (A3) was founded in 1986. As research and knowledge of avalanches grew, avalanche practitioners sought a platform to share information, ideas, and needs. Originally formed as the American Association of Avalanche Professionals, the organization addressed the need for communication and cohesion among the increasing number of U.S. avalanche professionals. Today the
American Avalanche Association continues to help connect avalanche professionals by focusing on education, professional development, publication, and research. The organization develops guidelines for avalanche education courses in the United States and helped facilitate the creation of the Professional Training Program. Among other avalanche related titles, the A3 publishes The Avalanche Review which serves as the professional journal for the avalanche industry. In conjunction with the U.S. Forest Service, the A3 operates avalanche.org as a clearinghouse for avalanche information from across the United States. Each year the A3 awards grants for avalanche research to help professionals better understand the avalanche phenomenon.
