In 2021, we put our our flexible pants and launched three semesters in a new location - the American West! These semesters investigated the same questions about power, colonialism, natural resources, and borders, this time in our own backyard. In 2023, we returned for our final three semesters in South America and Southern Africa. From the red rocks of Utah to the red dunes of Namibia, these were unforgettable!

From 2013 to 2017, we saw ten more semesters that explored the savannas and sand dunes of Southern Africa, the glaciers and ancient cities of South America! One semester became the first and only to dip into Malawi, and we pivoted our programs away from Central America and the southeastern corners of Africa to focus on consistent itineraries in two course areas, Southern Africa in the fall and South America in the spring.

After three-and-a-half incredible months exploring southern Africa, TTS41 has reached the end of the road - but in a pretty beautiful place!

Their last few days were spent in South Africa’s rolling green hills where they had time to reflect on their journey, talk about transitioning back home, and enjoy one more night sleeping under those incredible African skies. 🌄

At this year's South African-style Thanksgiving, TTS41 had a lot to be thankful for: three months traveling through and learning in four African countries, and experiencing it with a group of strong, inspiring, and like-minded students.

The end of a Traveling School semester can be a strange time. You’ve spent 3.5 months traveling with a group of like-minded students, exploring corners of the world that you only once dreamed of.

As TTS41's semester soon comes to an end, we’ve been thinking about the words of TTS40 South America alum, Claire, and how she summed up what it feels like when a Traveling School semester comes to a close.

“Our time is almost up. The last three months have slipped by and now I’m asking mom where she’ll meet me in the airport. How did this happen?

The truest treasure hasn’t been these stunning countries but the people I’ve traveled with. The fourteen women - strangers 3.5 months ago now seem like my sisters. The moments of laughter have brightened my world, their support made me feel safe, and their love made me full. Thank you all for sharing your perspectives, for hugging and cuddling, and for teaching me the deeper meaning of loving myself.”
