Please join us on April 12th from noon until 5:00 PM at Fiske Planetarium and Sommers-Bausch Observatory on the University of Colorado Boulder campus for Astronomy and Earth Day! This event is free for all ages and is an excellent opportunity to engage with astronomy, earth science, and sustainability in an environment that can serve anyone with any level of prior knowledge. Dr. Fran Bagenal is a senior research scientist and professor emerita at the University of Colorado, Boulder. She has participated in several of NASA's planetary exploration missions, including Voyager 1 and 2, Galileo, Deep Space 1, New Horizons and Juno. Her main area of expertise is the study of charged particles trapped in planetary magnetic fields and the interaction of plasmas with the atmospheres of planetary objects, particularly in the outer solar system.
Born and raised in the UK, Dr. Bagenal received her bachelor's degree in Physics and Geophysics from the University of Lancaster, England, and her doctorate degree in Earth and Planetary Sciences from MIT (Cambridge, Mass) in 1981. She spent five years as a postdoctoral researcher at Imperial College, London, before returning to the United States. In 1989, she joined the faculty at the University of Colorado in the Department of Astrophysical & Planetary Sciences.
She edited the monograph Jupiter: Planet, Satellites and Magnetosphere (Cambridge University Press, 2004). She has given many talks at schools and public events on the exploration of the outer solar system. In 2015, after 26 years of teaching, she gave up her faculty position to focus on New Horizons reaching Pluto and Juno in orbit around Jupiter.
Fun fact: Over the past 20 years, Fran has drunk about 10 cubic yards or meters of coffee at the . That would take 3 pick-up trucks to load up!
Sean McElwee graduated from UMass Amherst in 2014 with a BS in Astronomy. Out of undergrad, he began his career in photonics working at Thorlabs. Initially starting as an Application Engineer in their Tech Support department, he has been at Thorlabs for 12 years and currently works as a Content Strategist developing educational animated short form content.
Fun Fact: He has been skateboarding for more than 20 years!

Happy New Year, Boulder astronomers! We’ve missed you all. Our first Astronomy on Tap event for the year is coming up quick, and we plan on kicking this year off with a BANG!

If you join us on January 26th at 6pm at the Rayback, you’ll get to hear from Dr. Farrand about our favorite Martian robot friends, and Sam Kornreich will share about the mysteries of the solar corona and the importance of science outreach. We’ll see you there! 💫🔭🌍
