Our Food Story continues this month with Sponsor-a-Box September, part of our monthly Food Pantry campaign!

This month, we are asking our community to sponsor a food box for families in the High Country. Last month, we distributed 568 food boxes to members of our community — that’s 877 people impacted by our services in August alone. We are the only Food Pantry in the area that is open every single day, even on holidays and weekends.

Please help us continue supporting our community in the fight to end food insecurity. Thanks to our partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest, NC we are able to stretch your dollars in order to buy bulk food at a discounted rate.

In addition, we have amazing community partners like Food Lion, Lowes Foods, Harris Teeter, and more that provide food to us for little to no cost.

One food box costs around $2.24. We average about 26 boxes per day = $58.

Happy Labor Day Weekend! Hospitality House Northwest NC Watauga Housing & Outreach Center (including WeCAN and Medical Outpost); Wilkes Housing & Outreach Center; and Avery-Mitchell-Yancey Housing & Outreach Center will be CLOSED Monday September 7th.

Our Brook Hollow Complex in Boone will be OPEN, including our Community Kitchen and Front Porch Takeout from 8:00 am - 6:30 pm; and Food Pantry 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm.

We are thrilled to read the news about much needed affordable / workforce housing coming to Town of Boone, and West Jefferson!

Both of these projects are from Taft-Mills Group Taft Family Ventures and both have been awarded North Carolina CDBG Grants, part of Gov. Stein's 828-in-828 affordable housing initiative.

The Boone project, Hemlock Ridge Trace, is set to receive $11,406,600 to build 93 units across three residential buildings. The development, at U.S. 421 and Yosef Drive, sits on a 4.18-acre site next to Mountaineer Village and Modern Toyota of Boone.

The project proposes three residential buildings with 1- to 3-bedroom units intended for households earning at or below 60% of Watauga County’s median income — roughly $31,000 annually. They will remain affordable for 30 years. This project has already been approved by Boone Town Council as part of the Conditional District (CD) process, a site-specific rezoning method.

The West Jefferson project, Arrendell Trace, is a 55 unit complex located behind the Ingle’s Grocery store between South Jefferson Avenue and the High Vista apartment complex. The apartments will remain affordable for 30 years.

Rents for the units begin at less than $500 for a one-bedroom apartment, $900 for two-bedroom units, and approximately $1,050 for the three-bedroom apartments.

In Fall 2016, the people of Gatlinburg, Tennessee found themselves in a predicament as deadly fires ripped through Sevier County, leaving thousands of families homeless.

Enter Dolly Parton, who, within 48 hours of the fires had mobilized the considerable force of her empire, including many businesses and the philanthropic Dollywood Foundation, to provide cash assistance to families impacted in her native Sevier County.

Over the next six months, her My People’s Fund distributed $9 million in cash to nearly 1000 families who had lost their homes. The way the checks were structured will sound familiar to any student of basic income; each family received a monthly check for $1000 for six months, with a final check for $5000 in May of this year.

In a video announcing the fund, Parton said “we want to provide a hand up to all those families that have lost everything in the fires”.

Among the numbers used to demonstrate the need for a basic income today, one sticks to the ribs like no other: almost half of Americans cannot come up with $400 to cover an emergency expense. That emergency could be as mundane as a towed car, as harrowing as a trip to the emergency room, or as catastrophic as a natural disaster overtaking your family home.

It is clear that this charity was personal for Parton, but the impact of the money distributed could be a window into how a basic income of $1000 a month could help families across the country.

In a new study from the University of Tennessee, researchers devised a survey to gather information from participants in this unlikely pilot. What they found was that when asked what kind of support was most helpful in the wake of the fires, 11% of respondents said emotional support, 27% said item donations, and a strong majority of 62% said that the cash assistance they received from the fund was most helpful. - Economic Security Project
