Wow wow wow what a year. It's been a rough one.
Cold weather is very quickly approaching and I've decided to reboot Project Warm due to the pandemic fluctuations and the eviction moratorium lift.
Par usual, the housing in Watauga County is a CRISIS. People are experiencing houselessness in nearly every demographic: locals, students, young, old, abled, disabled, employed folk, unemployed folk, etc. People are experiencing houselessness for the very first time and others are veterans to the harshness of the High Country cold weather, wind, and flooding.
Like last year, I will be collecting COLD WEATHER CAMPING GEAR to help keep our houseless community SAFE and ALIVE. Someone might not have access to the ONE shelter in our 7 county region for many reasons: no room available, not eligible due to transience, sickness, community living PTSD, outstanding arrest warrants, bans, etc. Whatever the reason, EVERY human deserves safety and WARMTH.
Here are your options for helping out:
1. Donate your camping gear (tents, sleeping bags, tarps, hygiene stuff, survival gear, etc.). Because my car is so tiny and I'm in school and work full time, I cannot accept clothing unless specifically gloves or warm weather socks.
I can pick up/meet you somewhere to accept your donations or you can drop off at my house (DM me). I will distribute donations weekly.
2. Buy items off the amazon wishlist provided. The items on the list have been curated after many conversations with my friends who are houseless/previously houseless. These friends have named these items as the most hard-to-find and most valuable for survival and safety. When you buy off the list, the items ship to my home and I distribute them. https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/genericItemsPage/5WT8Q91G10I
3. PayPal/Venmo me at [email protected] and I will send you a receipt of what gear I purchased with that money (even if it's just a dollar). If you would like that money to go to gas/hotel funds, please let me know (message me).
Please send me a message with any questions/comments. I promise to begin responding regularly. My spring/summer was absolutely WILD with one crisis after the other, but I'm prioritizing this Project again. I am in school full time and work, so please allow 24 hours for me to get back to you. If you are someone/know someone who needs specific help of any kind, please message me and I will help you find the needed resources.
Remember that folks can eat for free 3 meals a day and receive food boxes at Hospitality House, there are mini free pantries around town, and FARM Cafe is another good food security source.
Holler with any concerns! I LOVE YOU and THANK YOU for caring for your neighbor.
