Community Kitchen

Community Kitchen Community Kitchen serves anyone in need. We serve meals to anyone in need six days a week from two locations.

Community Kitchen of Monroe County's mission is to work, alone and in collaboration with others, to eliminate hunger in Monroe County and surrounding areas, through direct service, education and advocacy. We also have programs targeting at-risk children and youth, taking meals and healthy snacks to them where they are.

Last week we started our Fill the Freezer campaign - an effort to secure funds needed to purchase local meat (whatever is needed beyond donations) at this year's 4-H auction at the Monroe County Fair. For years, we’ve relied on a true win-win solution: donated or purchased livestock raised by local youth at the 4-H auction at Monroe County Fair.

This year, with our food costs skyrocketing by 23%, securing enough food is an uphill battle.

Here is where you come in! A generous friend has issued a $15,000 Matching Challenge between now and the 4-H livestock auction on July 4th. Donations will be matched dollar-for-dollar to help us buy local livestock and pay processing fees, instantly doubling your impact:
-WIN for Local Youth: Rewards the hard work of local 4-H kids.
-WIN for Our Neighbors: Provides high-quality, nutritious protein for our nightly dinner service.
-WIN for Your Impact: A $25 gift becomes $50, and $250 becomes $500!

DOUBLE YOUR IMPACT: Help Us Fill Our Freezer! If we meet this challenge, we unlock $30,000 to secure a full 12 months of necessary food supplies.

Community Kitchen's Nutrition Links program is a partnership with IU Health Positive Link through which we provide two reheatable meals/day for individuals who are HIV+ and need additional food assistance. These meals are delivered to clients' homes each Monday - Friday, free of charge, by volunteers.

We are grateful to participate in the life of individuals this way, by helping to ensure they get the nutrition they need to manage their health. It's a small program that makes a significant impact in the lives of the folks involved.

We enjoyed hosting the IU Media School employees this week as they volunteered on two of our shifts as part of their annual Day of Service. On Wednesday, the IU Media School volunteers worked on our early morning shift making sack lunches for our Summer Food Service Program. On the mid-day shift, they prepped produce and helped dish up meals for carryout. As usual, they did an excellent job and kept our staff hopping to keep up with them.

We look forward to next year's Day of Service and hope to see everyone again!

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, to enforce the order to end slavery in the rebelling state farthest west.

Today, we honor this history and celebrate Black culture, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of freedom and equality. Juneteenth officially became a federal holiday in 2021, and it remains a powerful reminder of the work still ahead.

Wishing everyone a meaningful and joyful Juneteenth!

When you sit down to a meal, a reliable source of protein is often something taken for granted. At Community Kitchen, providing high-quality, nutritious protein for our nightly dinner service is one of our biggest ongoing challenges—and expenses. We use over 7,800 pounds of meat a year.

For years, we’ve relied on a true win-win solution: donated or purchased livestock raised by local youth at the 4-H auction at Monroe County Fair. But this year, with our food costs skyrocketing by 23%, securing enough food is an uphill battle.

We are steadily working our way through the month of June. Our summer program is in full swing, bringing in new volunteers to help. During the summer, we are lucky to have visiting family members come in with volunteers and we have an influx of youth volunteers helping while they are out of school. Kids 10-13 can come with an adult, 14 and older can volunteer by themselves. Not only is volunteering a confidence-builder, but it is a great way to start conversations with your kids about what it means to be hungry and not have enough money to feed yourself properly. By coming here to volunteer, they can see compassion in action and feel empowered to help lift up our neighbors when they need a little help. You can set up shifts for you and/or your family by contacting me at 812-332-0999 or [email protected].

We're in week 3 of our Summer Food Service Program! We go to 10 neighborhoods, distributing lunches to kids. We know that summer can be tough for families as they try to absorb the additional groceries needed when the kids are home all day. This program is designed to give families a little relief by providing lunch for the kids, ensuring they get the nutrition they need. We will continue throughout the summer until August 4th, the day before school starts.

If you want to help with this program, please contact us about volunteering. The delivery shift is from 9:45am-1:30pm and one volunteer goes on each route, along with a staff member who is driving. You will hand out lunches and help staff keep track of the meals served. You can schedule a weekly shift, or schedule less often if that works better for you.

If you're interested, email at [email protected] or call 812-332-0999 to get signed up.
