⚠️ Weather update for Monroe County

The National Weather Service has a Flood Warning in effect for northern Monroe County until 8:30 PM. Heavy rain has already caused flooding in low-lying spots, with more possible tonight.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is also in effect until 8 PM, and a Flood Watch continues through Friday evening.

If you're heading out, avoid low water crossings and don't drive through flooded roads. Turn around, don't drown, most flood deaths happen in vehicles, not floodwater on foot.

More than twenty years ago, Dale Staton built Bloomington Online by hand. He put the same care into it that he put into his photography and into showing up at community events all over town. When the time came to pass it on, we met at a local Starbucks, he walked me through everything he had made, and we were glad to help keep it alive.

Local Indiana University could help protect Indiana's poultry farms — and your grocery bill 🐔

Remember the egg prices last year? An IU Indiana University School of Public Health-Bloomington researcher is doing something about it. Assistant professor Drew Capone is leading a project that traces avian flu by testing wild bird waste in Indiana's streams, rivers, and lakes. It's essentially an early-warning system for poultry farmers before an outbreak hits their flocks.

Capone's team has been out sampling right here in Bloomington's own Clear Creek as they refine their collection methods, with plans to build a public dashboard that maps where the virus is circulating. Since wild bird migration has become the main way the disease spreads since 2020, catching it early in waterways could save farmers, and the rest of us, from another round of sky-high egg prices and the costly flock losses that come with an outbreak.
