When most people think about homelessness, they think about the need for food, shelter, or clothing.

Those needs are REAL.

But recent research conducted in the West Valley uncovered something just as important.

Many people experiencing homelessness said they wanted to be listened to, respected, and treated like human beings...not simply handed supplies and forgotten. They described valuing conversations, genuine care, and relationships that recognized their dignity.

Fresh food. Clean water. Feminine hygiene products. Socks and underwear. A consistent face they can trust.

These aren't luxury requests.

They're the basics of human dignity and they're exactly what our Hope Dealers bring to the West Valley week after week.

Research tells us that when outreach workers take time to listen, not just distribute, it changes everything. It turns a transaction into a relationship. And relationships are what actually move people toward stability.

Chronic homelessness is the lack of support after success. Success without support creates feelings of failure when mistakes happen. Going from the streets to an apartment is an improvement, however it is not a true success. Success is the realization that a little support is always needed, and the knowledge of the need creates the urgency of action! Without support, failure happens, with every success, there will be a failure. True success comes with the knowledge of failure, prevention is letting a person know that you see their struggles before they acknowledge that they need help. Prevention coats less than the aftermath of a fall. Just because a child takes their first step doesn't mean they know how to walk. Helping the Child walk is easy. Focus on guidance, not sympathy. If you always keep the child from falling, the child never learns to stand on their own. True support isn't carrying a person through rough times, it's walking through ruff times with them even if you don't have to!

Public frustration around homelessness is real. People want safer streets, healthier communities, and solutions that actually work.

The good news is that many cities are demonstrating a practical path forward.

Communities that achieve measurable reductions in homelessness tend to share three characteristics:

• Enough housing across the affordability spectrum
• An outcomes-driven response system that tracks people by name and measures results
• Targeted support for individuals facing the most significant barriers

When these elements work together, visible homelessness declines and people regain stability.

This approach is already producing measurable reductions in cities across the country. The challenge now is scaling what works.

🔵 HOMELESSNESS IS MISUNDERSTOOD — AND OUR CITY MUST DO BETTER 🔵

Homelessness is by all means deeply misunderstood.
People who become homeless are not broken, lazy, or beyond hope. Many were once professionals. Many used to work. Many are students. Many have families. They had lives — and many are still fighting to rebuild them.

They are not numbers that must be counted, processed, or packed away into shelters.
They are human beings who deserve dignity, opportunity, and inclusion.

We cannot keep treating people as passive recipients of handouts. Homeless and unemployed people need to be integrated into the economic system, empowered to contribute, and seen as potential — not a burden.

Our cities are full of unused buildings, empty lots, and wasted infrastructure. Instead of letting these spaces rot and attract unlawful activities, why not transform them into places of creativity, productivity, and community upliftment?

We need a city that invests in accessibility, innovation, and human development — not one that hides poverty behind closed doors and statistics.

Homelessness is not a shame on the individual.
It is a failure of leadership, policy, and vision.

It’s time to rethink how we see our people.
It’s time to restore dignity.
It’s time to open opportunities.
It’s time to rebuild lives.

Multiple recent cases of violence against Bloomington’s homeless population have led to unease among the community and local advocates. While the city says the incidents aren’t targeted, some worry about the public’s attitude toward those who are homeless.
