STAIR of Birmingham Through one-on-one tutoring, STAIR empowers students with the tools to read better and dream bigger, because every child deserves to read on grade level.

While Birmingham has seen improvement in student achievement, there’s still a lot of work to be done. 3 out of 4 Birmingham students are currently unable to reach reading benchmarks. The single greatest predictor of high school graduation and career success is third grade reading proficiency. Children who can’t read are unlikely to graduate from high school, find their life’s work, or read their child’s favorite bedtime story. Two afternoons a week, STAIR students work one-on-one with a dedicated volunteer focused on their individual literacy needs, empowering them to start their adventure in reading. During COVID-19, tutors and students are meeting virtually. After completing the program, STAIR students are excited to pick up a book and read independently, putting them on the path to proudly walk across their graduation stage, apply for their dream job, and teach their own kids to read

This student proudly read every sentence of this book out loud, and when he was asked, “Why did the main character suddenly switch from hating green eggs and ham to loving them so much?” He replied, “He just needed to TRY them.” As an afterthought, he said quietly, “My mom always says the same thing about vegetables. Just try them.” 😂
Reading comprehension is best learned through relationship. Why STAIR’s ongoing one-on-one tutoring program has a great success rate!

What’s with all the red cups? We’re teaching parents fun games to help strengthen their child’s understanding of phonics at home! STAIR is proudly partnering with ARI / The Alabama Reading Initiative to provide free “Coaching a Better Reader” parent-support events this fall at Oliver Elementary. Parents and students enrolled in the STAIR program enjoy dinner, meet other parents and educators, and learn practical, hands-on tips that support the teachers’ work in the classroom. (There are still spots available in this program for Oliver families!) 📚💡❤️

"What is a word tutors often use to describe volunteering with STAIR for $100?"
❤"Meaningful"❤
Helping a young Birmingham student learn how to be a confident reader is, indeed, meaningful. When a child learns to read, they excel in ALL subjects in school because they are comprehending the text and using their skills (and imaginations) to really understand what they're studying.
Sign up for this meaningful volunteer opportunity at stairbirmingham.org/tutor
