Spotted: our Junior Board showing up and showing out. 🌟

Thank you to Rotaract Club of Birmingham for having us at their 2026 Annual Meeting. Better Basics was selected as a Monthly Service Partner, meaning Rotaract members donated books and volunteered alongside us. We were so happy to celebrate your year!

We were also thrilled to see two of our own Junior Board members already in the room, leading and serving.

How do you move 10,000+ books across an entire city in a single day? 📦

For the past several years, Birmingham Park & Recreation has been an essential partner in making Better Basics Reads possible. They pick up and deliver more than 10,000 books to 27 schools across Birmingham—the largest logistical lift of our entire event.

This is what true community partnership looks like: no spotlight, no stage, just a commitment to Birmingham's children and a job done with care.

From May 7-14, something extraordinary happened across Greater Birmingham. More than 700 volunteers brought the joy of reading into 42 schools, reaching more than 15,000 students. Every single child heard a story and received a brand new book to take home.

None of this would have been possible without our incredible partner, Books-A-Million.

Books-A-Million’s sponsorship of this event made Better Basics Reads 2026 a reality. Their commitment to children's literacy in our community goes beyond a donation; it's an investment in the futures of thousands of young readers.

Applications are now open for the 2026-2027 Better Basics Junior Board!

Better Basics is seeking passionate professionals to join our Junior Board and help advance our mission to empower children across Alabama with foundational academic skills and educational opportunities for lifelong success.

Junior Board members play a vital role through:
-Advocacy and community outreach
-Donor and sponsor cultivation
-Volunteer service at Better Basics Reads and other programs
-Annual fundraiser development and ex*****on
-Monthly meeting participation (virtual and in-person)

What a great start to ! Thanks to our incredible volunteers, Birmingham City Schools, and Books-A-Million, more than 10,000 students are taking home a new book today. There's nothing like seeing young readers light up when they hear a story and get to take it home!
