Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion:

Through more than seventy-five years of conservation work in one of our nation’s most ecologically rich states, Alabama Audubon has seen firsthand how diversity strengthens natural communities. We believe that the same principle applies to human communities, which is why our organization is committed to providing equitable opportunities for all Alabamians to lear

n about and enjoy wild birds, their habitats, and the natural world. One of the best ways to support that belief is by valuing and actively seeking to strengthen diversity among our staff, our board, and our membership. To that end, Alabama Audubon welcomes the whole of our community to our work, and strives to make our programs, classes, and events open and accessible to all.

Science Saturday!

During our Fort Morgan banding week in April, we posted about a Great-crested Flycatcher that we caught in 2023. It was originally banded on April 13, 2014, at Fort Morgan by Bob Sargent. At that time, it was at least 10 years old. Well, during our banding efforts this year we caught that bird AGAIN! That would make it at least 13 years old.

But that's not all! At the same time we caught that bird, we caught a second Great-crested Flycatcher. The new one was banded on April 13, 2013, at Fort Morgan, making it at least 14 years old! The oldest know Great-crested Flycatcher in the wild was 14 years and 11 months.

Bird banding provides us with data like site fidelity, body condition, survival, and longevity. Maybe next year one of these birds will set a new record for oldest Great-crested Flycatcher!

Scissor-tailed Flycatcher Event at the Black Belt (Free!)
The Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, Alabama Audubon's 2026 Bird of the Year, is declining across much of its range and serves as a symbol of the ongoing loss of grassland birds. Alabama's Black Belt is home to one of only a handful of isolated populations in North America.

Join us on June 20 in Greensboro, AL, for a unique caravan-style birding adventure as we search for this iconic species and learn more about its conservation.

Science Saturday!

We have a new project this year: Killdeer Nest Watch. While Killdeer seem to be everywhere and are pretty easy birds to find, their population has been decreasing across much of the range, including in Alabama. In fact, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature listed them as Near-threatened in 2024 because of this decline.

The Killdeer Nest Watch project focuses on finding and monitoring Killdeer nests across the state. We are gathering information on habitat use, nest success, and chick survival. So far this season, our team has monitored over 30 nests and we are getting some interesting data. Causes of nest loss have included possible trampling by elephants (that pair nested in the elephant enclosure at the zoo!) and being mowed over. Although we have seen many successful nests, chick survival appears to be low. We have documented predation by a grackle, and a chick being run over by a vehicle.

It's not all sad news though. We have been banding adults and chicks, and one of the chicks from a nest in the middle of downtown Birmingham successfully fledged! It was still hanging around with its parents even after they started their second nest.

Do you want to help us collect data on Killdeer?! Join the Killdeer Crew! More information can be found on our website: https://alaudubon.org/volunteer

Black Belt Birding Festival 2026: Joe Farm – The Kite Show!
One of the highlight events of the Black Belt Birding Festival is the Kite Show hosted by Joe Farm and Birding and Nature LLC at the historic Joe Farm, a fourth-generation Black-owned cattle ranch. Guests gather to watch Swallow-tailed and Mississippi Kites soar behind Mr. Cornelius Joe’s tractor, snatching insects from the air in an unforgettable wildlife spectacle unique to Alabama’s Black Belt.

The Joe Farm has gained international recognition as a premier birding destination, with features on BBC Travel, Nat Geo’s Extraordinary Birder with Christian Cooper, and Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s Living Bird magazine. Learn more-> https://www.connectingwithbirdsandnaturetours.com

For Christopher Joe, birding is more than watching birds, it’s about slowing down, connecting with the land, and finding peace in nature. The Kite Show is a reminder that experiences like these are good for the soul and help people appreciate the beauty and culture of Alabama’s Black Belt in a meaningful way.
