Sweet Om Alabama

Sweet Om Alabama Sweet Om Alabama seeks to cultivate the health & well being of Alabamians by mobilizing the community to share the benefits of yoga.

Sweet Om Alabama is a community service organization that began in 2007 and is dedicated to serving the community through the shared practice of yoga. We currently have programs at several local organizations and host community yoga events. In the future we will be training teachers to take the therapeutic applications of yoga to targeted populations whose healing will benefit greatly from practicing yoga and mindful meditation.

One of the most important findings that emerged from our recent Yoga in the World Research study was the overwhelming number of respondents across the 10 surveyed countries who cited “stress release” as a primary reason for practicing yoga. This is a shift from the previous 2016 Yoga in the America survey findings. It’s a pretty stark contrast, which is fitting given the events of the last several years.

The release of the study coincides with a recently published report on stress by the American Psychological Association, explains Dr. Gail Parker, a psychologist, certified yoga therapist, author, and president of the Black Yoga Teachers Alliance. Titled “Stress in America 2023,” the report concludes there is “mounting evidence that our society is experiencing the psychological impacts of a collective trauma.” (yogajournal.com)

Benefits of doing Yoga!!!!

Did you know that a staggering 30% of the global population grapples with sleep issues? (worldsleepsociety.org) Let’s explore some ways yoga could help.

Beyond the physical poses, yoga creates a tranquil experience for quieting the mind and welcoming a sound night's sleep. The practice offers numerous benefits to sleep quality and overall sleep patterns. Its combination of physical postures, controlled breathing, and meditation techniques helps reduce stress and anxiety, both common culprits of sleep disturbances. Regular yoga practice has been shown to improve sleep latency (the time it takes to fall asleep), increase total sleep time, and enhance sleep efficiency.
