s inpatient and outpatient services at its Russell Campus on Birmingham’s historic Southside with additional specialty services provided at Children’s South, Children’s on 3rd and in Huntsville and Montgomery. Primary medical care is provided in more than a dozen communities across central Alabama. Children’s is the only health system in Alabama dedicated solely to the care and treatment of children. It is a private, not-for-profit medical center that serves as the teaching hospital for the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) pediatric medicine, surgery, psychiatry, research and residency programs. The medical staff consists of UAB faculty and Children’s full-time physicians as well as private practicing community physicians.

Our specialized team includes pediatric hematologists, nurse practitioners, nurses, psychologists, neuropsychologists, research coordinators, social workers, education specialists, and child life specialists dedicated to the care of infants, children, and young adults living with sickle cell anemia.

Recently redesignated by the Alabama Department of Public Health, our trauma team provides expert, around-the-clock care for 500–600 trauma patients each year. Delivering life-saving treatment when it matters most.

From emergency care and trauma surgery to education, research, and community outreach, our team is committed to providing the highest level of care for children and families across Alabama.

Congratulations to Taylor Washington, a standout student-athlete and spring 2026 nursing graduate from University of Alabama at Birmingham, who has landed her dream job at Children's of Alabama in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU)!

As a hurdler, nursing student, and recipient of the Daisy Foundation Extraordinary Nursing Student Award, Taylor balanced competition, clinicals, and academics with excellence. Proving that hard work, heart, and determination can take you anywhere. She shared that caring for children and helping people always came first, and now she’ll continue that passion right here at Children’s.

A time to recognize the extraordinary nurses who show up for children and families during some of life’s hardest days.

In our recently expanded Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, every monitor, every critical moment, and every difficult decision is met with expert care, compassion, and unwavering support. Our PICU nurses are there not only to provide lifesaving care, but to bring comfort, advocacy, and hope when families need it most.
