Weβre RISE Flag Football Bethesda β powered by Nike β designed for kids who want to have fun, stay active, and learn the game in a supportive, team-oriented environment. Meet Coach Butch Worden: A Trusted Leader in Youth Sports
For over 30 years, Butch Worden has been a dedicated coach, educator, and mentor to young athletes in Montgomery County. As the current Commissioner of Bethesda RISE Flag Football, Butch brings a lifetime of experience and passion to the fieldβhelping kids grow not just as athletes, but as confident, respectful, and resilient individuals. He joined Walter Johnson High School (WJ) in 1995 as the Varsity Football Offensive Coordinator and became the schoolβs Head Football Coach in 1998. Just two years later, he led the Wildcats to their best season in 35 yearsβa milestone that reflects his ability to motivate and inspire young people. Butchβs love for working with kids goes far beyond football. He has coached girlsβ basketball, lacrosse, co-ed bocce, and is the Assistant Athletic Director at WJ, supporting students across a variety of sports and activities. Heβs known not just for his coaching skills, but for his patience, leadership, and genuine care for every child with whom he works. In 2024, when Montgomery County introduced girlsβ flag football as a varsity sport, Butch was proud to become the very first coach hired for the program in the county. He guided his team to the division championship in their inaugural season, building strong bonds and showing whatβs possible when young athletes are supported and empowered. βThis might be the most fun Iβve ever had coaching,β he said. βAnd I canβt wait to bring flag football to even more students across Montgomery County.β
Whether your child is just starting out or looking for a fun new challenge, Coach Wordenβs program offers a safe, welcoming environment where they can learn, grow, and love the game.
