The Food Council applauds Montgomery County for being the first in the Washington Metropolitan region to officially take on the Local Food Procurement Challenge!

We are lucky to have such forward-thinking public officials, and here's so much gratitude to Councilmember Andrew Friedson for spearheading the charge.

It was great to hear speakers at the press conference in support of bolstering local farms selling to institutions:

Today marks a key deadline in the Maryland General Assembly: Crossover Day.

This marks the point by which a bill must pass out of its chamber of origin, either the House of Delegates or the Senate, and “cross over” to the other chamber to have the best chance of becoming law.

For advocates, Crossover Day is important because it signals which bills are gaining traction, helps prioritize advocacy efforts for bills still in play, and marks a shift in focus to influencing the second chamber. It’s often seen as a turning point in the session, when the list of viable legislation narrows and the pace of decision-making accelerates.

Thank you to Mid-County United Ministries and Wheaton High School for hosting the Food Council and fellow partners at their monthly family choice pantry, giving us the opportunity to see how grant funding from the Office of Food Systems Resilience is being put into action to support MCPS students and their families experiencing food insecurity.

This monthly market serves approximately 100 families, with a strong emphasis on providing access to fresh produce and culturally relevant foods.

Our Food Resource Specialists, Sharon and Febe, were on-site connecting families to SNAP, FARMS, Sun Bucks, and County Groceries.

We are grateful for the partnerships that make this work possible.

Thank you to our fellow attendees:
MCPS Superintendent, Dr.Thomas Taylor;
Staff from Councilmembers Sayles and Luedtke's offices; Nestor Alvarenga, Director, Wheaton Regional Services Center; and staff from the Office of Food Systems Resilience.
