We have received reports of an issue preventing advancement to the next screen in the Safeguarding Youth Training.

The issue appears to occur when training videos are viewed in full-screen mode on some computers. In full-screen mode, the Forward button may not be visible when it is time to advance.

To resolve the issue:

1) Exit full-screen mode on the video by pressing the ESC key. Alternatively, move the cursor to the bottom of the video screen, hover over the full-screen icon in the lower-right corner, and click it to exit full-screen mode.

2) Once the video is no longer in full-screen mode, the Forward button should be visible, allowing the training to continue.

You can complete the course using either Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge.

Following these steps should allow the training to progress normally.

Regardless of the type of boat, regardless of the type of river, regardless of your (group’s) skill level, GET OUT AND SCOUT.

Thanks Eric Jackson, good advice!

Before you run a rapid, sometimes the best stroke is no stroke at all.

Get out. Look at the water. See where it accelerates, where the boat will land, what the current does next, and what each paddler needs to know.

Judgment and preparation build confidence before the cockpit ever reaches the line. Boat design matters, but good decisions always come first.

ATTENTION SHIPS WITH DECEMBER EXPIRATIONS.
(most of us)

The 2 month, January - February, grace period is no more. For December renewals, plan on COMPLETING BY DECEMBER 1st. That is, National approved, not just paperwork submitted to Council. Don’t wait for stragglers, renew your ship on time, then deal with the stragglers later. Don’t shut down your program January 1st waiting on 1 or 2 renewals.

Important Membership Renewal Update

Scouting America has announced an important change to the membership renewal process. The current membership lapse (grace) period will be phased out and will officially end on December 31, 2026.

What’s Changing?

The membership lapse period has allowed members a short grace period after their renewal date before becoming inactive. As Scouting America simplifies its renewal process, that grace period will gradually be reduced and then eliminated.

Timeline

October 2026 Renewals
• Last members to receive the full 2-month lapse period

November 2026 Renewals
• 1-month lapse period

December 2026 Renewals
• No lapse period

Beginning September 2026, new and renewing units will pay the standard charter fee plus prorated membership fees through February 2028.

Beginning January 1, 2027, all members must maintain a current registration to remain active. Expired memberships may impact participation, advancement, leadership eligibility, and registration status.

Now is a great time for unit leaders, committee members, and families to review renewal dates and plan ahead to avoid any interruption in membership.

Additional information will be shared as Scouting America continues implementing its updated membership and renewal process.
