Kitchen Table Advisors

Kitchen Table Advisors Kitchen Table Advisors (KTA) works with under-resourced farmers and ranchers in Northern and Central California to fuel their long-term success.

We work at both the individual and institutional levels through two core programs. Our 1:1, bilingual Business Advising program offers personalized support to farmers and ranchers. KTA’s Ecosystem Building program yields larger-scale impact via collaborative projects that increase equitable access to land, capital, and markets. Guiding KTA’s work is our vision that sustainable farmers and ranchers are thriving within equitable, community-based food systems.

Over the last month, both our Program and Organizational Resourcing teams met in-person for some connective and generative retreats.

Our Program team met in Sonoma County and visited KTA clients Zarate Family Farm, Yagi Sisters, & Fox Sparrow Farm and dropped by program partner FEED Cooperative for some cross-regional learnings.

Meanwhile, our Organizational Resourcing team convened at program partner EarthSeed Farm, an organic Afro-Indigenous permaculture farm and orchard.

With our team scattered across Northern and Central California and serving clients and projects across regions, these in-person moments are crucial for both fostering organizational resilience and rest, as well as helping us align towards our collective visions of thriving, sustainable food systems. Very grateful to be in community with our team 🌟

A warm welcome to our newest team member, Simone Teitelbaum, who is joining us as our new Business Advising Program Manager!

Simone’s commitment to KTA’s work is deeply personal. She has spent years farming in California, Chile, NYC, and Mexico, working within regenerative and small family farms which have shaped her understanding of the labor, skill, and resilience at the core of our food system. As a fluent Spanish speaker, she is especially drawn to KTA’s bilingual, relationship-centered approach and is thrilled at the opportunity to work towards a more equitable, regenerative, and farmer-led food system.

Simone believes that supporting farmers is one of the most direct ways to build equitable and resilient communities. Her commitment is rooted in more than a decade of work in systems change, building and managing programs across public education, urban and rural farming, and food systems.

"To value food and the meal on your plate, you do not all need to become farmers. Instead you can be intentional in seeking out local food, meeting farmers, and cooking from scratch rather than a package."

In this recent Pages from a Farmer column, KTA alumni client and Senior Farm Business Advisor Carine Hines discusses the process of making a meal as a mother, farmer, and food enthusiast, tracing the experience from seed to fork.

Read the column here:

Unlike most working mothers these days, I never got on board with the idea of meal planning. Yes, I will skim recipe articles for inspiration, buy a few unique ingredients to keep my pantry stocked, and may have a rough idea of at least one meal I might cook in the upcoming week. But really, cooking

Check out Cal Matters' recent article on California's Farm to School program, which pairs local farmers, ranchers, and other food producers with school districts to provide fresh meals to student.

The article details how food hubs like KTA partner Spork Food Hub are key in linking producers with schools, with Spork themselves working with more than 100 small farms and 40 school districts from Crescent City to Los Angeles Unified.
