East European Folklife Center Our Vision: We envision a global community of passionate amateurs and professionals, sharing what we know and love about Balkan music, dance, and folklore.

The East European Folklife Center (EEFC) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote, celebrate, and educate the public about traditional and traditionally based music, dance, and cultures of the Balkans. By inspiring and supporting research and study in these fields, we preserve both historical and living traditions for future generations.

Let’s get this party started, folks.

TOMORROW, Wednesday, October 7th, at 8:00 PM ET/5:00 PM PT, we’re kicking off our first online class of the season with Tano Brock teaching Turkish Clarinet. This workshop will focus on Turkish clarinet repertoire, ornamentation, style, and makam. Together, you’ll dive deep into several songs, exploring the intricacies of tone and ornamentation, and how a simple melody can be transformed with embellishment and variation. Both Bb and G clarinets are welcome!

Sign up at least two hours before the class start at [bit.ly/EEFCTurkishClarinet]. Registration fees are sliding-scale and all registrants get access to class recordings for three months, so you can learn even if you’re not in the live class. We hope to see you for this amazing series with Tano this month!

As many of us still basking in the post-camp season glow, the Board and Staff are hard at work reading your evaluations, navigating staff transitions, moving forward with our search for a new East Coast campsite, and tackling many other challenges to ensure our 2027 camp season can be just as rewarding. Join us on Saturday October 3rd over Zoom to add your voice to our planning process at our next Board & Staff Office Hour!

Stay tuned to our email newsletters and social media for the meeting link and discussion points, which will be circulated in the week prior to office hours. We hope you will come out to share your perspectives and thoughts as we plan for our future together.

About last week…

Despite a notable lack of bear appearances, our 49th (!) West Coast camp was another special one. Amidst the Redwoods, we made music and danced, learned and remembered, welcomed new campers of all ages and strengthened our multigenerational, multicultural community. These videos and photos are a tiny attempt at capturing the absolute fun we had.

We are - as always - so grateful for all of the faculty, staff, and volunteers who made this workshop possible. We are also grateful to all our campers for building and growing this uniquely evolving and timeless space. We do this together and for each other, and we hope to carry that energy through to our East Coast camp and all year round.

We’ll see many of our friends in August at Iroquois Springs, and thank you to our West Coasters for kicking off another memorable summer. We hope you keep dancing till our 50th in Mendocino ❤️

Folks, we are but a little over 24 hours away from reprising their Saturday night opening set and getting the party started at camp…it’s go time, y’all!

We can’t wait to see all you lovely West Coast attendees in the Redwoods tomorrow. Please make sure that you’ve read the camper emails, downloaded the resources you need, and let your friends know you’re off the grid for the next week. It’ll be important that we all stay informed, healthy, and prepared moving into our time together, so do give those emails one more look as you get your final camp affairs in order.

Safe travels to one and all as we make our way to Mendocino! 🚙✈️🐪
