In our Beyond Plastic Pollution Course, offered through Bennington College, we’ll delve into almost every aspect of plastic pollution and what we can all do to reduce it—both in our own lives and more broadly.

Class begins on Wednesday, September 9th from 7 - 9 pm ET and goes through October 21st.

This was a fascinating and fun conversation about recycling's benefits, the shortcomings of recycling plastic specifically, why waste reduction is far more important than recycling, and the importance of policy solutions, such as better recycling education and stronger regulation.

Tell Starbucks: Ditch the plastic! How?

1. Serve ALL customers who order inside company-owned stores in reusable mugs or glasses, unless they specifically request a to-go cup. This is already Starbucks’ policy, but the company needs to provide its employees the tools and staffing necessary to consistently implement it

2. Switch from plastic to fiber-based to-go cups and lids across all stores, just as Starbucks has already done in more than 550 stores across 14 states

3. Remove images suggesting that plastic cups are recyclable from in-store recycling bins. Our recycling tracker investigation found that Starbucks’ claims about recycling these cups are dubious

Microplastics are impacting our bodies, but do you know exactly how that’s happening?

Microplastics enter our bodies primarily in two ways, through breathing them in or from swallowing them.

Once inside our bodies, microplastics have two types of impact: physical and chemical.

There are individual actions we can take to reduce our exposure to microplastics, but ultimately we need systemic change by adopting new laws to protect our health. .

We need our lawmakers to adopt new laws that require:

✅ Reducing plastic production
✅ Reducing toxic chemicals used to make plastic
✅ Funding waste reduction and reuse programs

We are so lucky to have college student Leah Penny as a member of our Beyond Plastics Speakers Bureau. Based in the Worcester, Massachusetts, area, Leah brings her enthusiasm, optimism, and deep love of nature to audiences across her community, sharing about Beyond Plastics’ work and inspiring others to take action.

Leah's lifelong connection to the natural world has only deepened as she's witnessed the effects of climate change over the years. "I feel connected to nature and have noticed the negative impacts of climate change in recent years and since being a kid," she says. One of the barriers preventing us from reducing single-use packaging and banning toxic chemicals? Fat cat lobbyists.

From March to April 2026, the most lobbied non-budget bill in NY State was the Packaging Reduction and Recycling Infrastructure Act. This was also the case in 2025.

Special interests may have deep pockets, but the grassroots movement to protect our health and environment is only growing stronger.
