August 8, 2026 ~ Purple Heart DaThe Vermont Veterans' Home 🇺🇸💜
Thank you to the Vermont Veterans’ Home for inviting American Legion Auxiliary Unit 13 to share in this very special Purple Heart Ceremony, remembering all the heroes who paid the ultimate sacrifice and honoring those Purple Heart recipients who were with us today.
We were especially honored to present five Quilts of Valor, three made by our unit, two donated, to living veterans who have been touched by war.
The Quilts of Valor Foundation began in 2003 with a dream—literally. Founder Catherine Roberts’ son, Nat, was deployed in Iraq. Catherine dreamed of a young man sitting on the side of his bed, overwhelmed by despair as his “war demons” surrounded him. In the next scene, she saw him wrapped in a quilt. His entire demeanor changed from despair to hope and well-being.
The message of her dream was simple: Quilts = Healing.
The Quilts of Valor mission is “to cover Service Members and living Veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.”
Donations made in loving memory of our ALA Unit 13 sister, Sandra Hamilton, made these three beautiful Quilts of Valor possible. Our Unit 13 members worked hard on this special project—cutting, counting, creating the Quilt of Valor 2026 square, and putting the quilts together.
A very special thank-you to Lori Girkstas for her quilt donation for two Purple Heart veterans at the Vermont Veterans’ Home, and to Marsha Latterell Morse and TheScarlett Creations for their generous quilting donation. Your kindness helped make this day possible. ❤️
Representative Mary Morrissey presented each recipient with a proclamation signed by Governor Phil Scott, recognizing August 8, 2026, as Purple Heart Day in Vermont.
We were honored to recognize: Army Sergeant Richard Dziadul, Marine Corporal Gary Martin, Marine Corporal Phil Young, Navy Seaman Bryan Craft, An Army recipient who wishes to remain anonymous and The Vermont Veterans’ Home
What an exciting and meaningful day for our Unit. To every Purple Heart recipient, thank you for your courage, your sacrifice, and your service to our country. We are forever grateful. 🇺🇸
God Bless our Veterans. God Bless America. 💜🇺🇸
