August 8, 2026 ~ Purple Heart DaThe Vermont Veterans' Home 🇺🇸💜

Thank you to the Vermont Veterans’ Home for inviting American Legion Auxiliary Unit 13 to share in this very special Purple Heart Ceremony, remembering all the heroes who paid the ultimate sacrifice and honoring those Purple Heart recipients who were with us today.

We were especially honored to present five Quilts of Valor, three made by our unit, two donated, to living veterans who have been touched by war.

The Quilts of Valor Foundation began in 2003 with a dream—literally. Founder Catherine Roberts’ son, Nat, was deployed in Iraq. Catherine dreamed of a young man sitting on the side of his bed, overwhelmed by despair as his “war demons” surrounded him. In the next scene, she saw him wrapped in a quilt. His entire demeanor changed from despair to hope and well-being.
The message of her dream was simple: Quilts = Healing.

The Quilts of Valor mission is “to cover Service Members and living Veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.”

Donations made in loving memory of our ALA Unit 13 sister, Sandra Hamilton, made these three beautiful Quilts of Valor possible. Our Unit 13 members worked hard on this special project—cutting, counting, creating the Quilt of Valor 2026 square, and putting the quilts together.

A very special thank-you to Lori Girkstas for her quilt donation for two Purple Heart veterans at the Vermont Veterans’ Home, and to Marsha Latterell Morse and TheScarlett Creations for their generous quilting donation. Your kindness helped make this day possible. ❤️

Representative Mary Morrissey presented each recipient with a proclamation signed by Governor Phil Scott, recognizing August 8, 2026, as Purple Heart Day in Vermont.
We were honored to recognize: Army Sergeant Richard Dziadul, Marine Corporal Gary Martin, Marine Corporal Phil Young, Navy Seaman Bryan Craft, An Army recipient who wishes to remain anonymous and The Vermont Veterans’ Home

What an exciting and meaningful day for our Unit. To every Purple Heart recipient, thank you for your courage, your sacrifice, and your service to our country. We are forever grateful. 🇺🇸

God Bless our Veterans. God Bless America. 💜🇺🇸

📚🎒 Bennington Night Out – Backpack Giveaway 🎒📚

On August 4, more than 350 backpacks in nine different colors were filled and ready to be given away during Bennington Night Out.

The smiles on the children’s faces said it all! Families enjoyed free haircuts, hair braiding, lawn games, a gift table, popcorn, cotton candy, hot dogs, and ice cream. The Bennington Fire Department delighted everyone with a refreshing spray from the fire truck, Unit 13’a Patriotic gifts along with fun stickers applied by Mary Morrissey, and the bouncy house was filled with laughter and giggles all evening long.

Children also had the chance to win bicycles, and a visit from the Army National Guard added even more excitement to this wonderful community event.

Thank you to everyone who volunteered, donated, and made this special event possible.

It was an honor for us to witness the return of POW/MIA PFC Bernard Sweet to his hometown. We understand that along the route from Bradley Airport to Bennington, his family, the es**rt of police, troopers, sheriffs, fire trucks, ambulances, and riders were met with roads, bridges, and streets full of people paying tribute to PFC Bernard Sweet.
Thank you Denise Colety for organizing the wonderful reception afterward.
