YWCA Bellingham YWCA is dedicated to eliminating racism and empowering women. Since 1907, YWCA Bellingham has offered safe housing for women.

Our emergency housing, permanent supportive housing, and senior housing programs are available for unaccompanied adult women in Whatcom County, and are supported through a combination of resident program fees, grants from public and private sources, and other community contributions. Women come to us for many different reasons, but the goal for each is the same: YWCA Bellingham aims to give women a safe, supportive place to stay while connecting them with the appropriate resources they need to ultimately become self-supporting. The YWCA Larrabee Residence Program provides housing for 41 women in our historic landmark building at Forest and Maple Streets in Bellingham.

On Indigenous Peoples Day, YWCA Bellingham honors the vibrant Indigenous communities whose histories, cultures, traditions, and contributions are an essential part of our shared story.

Here in Whatcom County, we recognize the Lummi Nation (Lhaq’temish) and the Nooksack Indian Tribe, whose ancestral homelands include the lands and waterways we call home today. We honor their enduring connection to this place, and the generations who continue to carry their cultures, languages, and traditions forward.

We also recognize that honoring Indigenous peoples means more than acknowledging the past. It means listening to Indigenous voices, learning the truth of our shared history, and supporting Indigenous communities in the present and future.

YWCA Bellingham locations will be closed today in observance of this very important day.

🧡 Every Child Matters.

Today, YWCA Bellingham recognizes Orange Shirt Day, a day to honor the Indigenous children who were taken from their families and communities and forced to attend residential and Indian boarding schools, as well as the survivors, families, and communities who continue to carry the impacts of this history.

We wear orange to remember that every child deserves to be safe, loved, supported, and connected to their community.

Remembering is only the beginning. We can also listen, learn, speak truthfully about this history, and support the work of Indigenous communities toward healing and self-determination.
