YWCA Bellingham

YWCA Bellingham YWCA is dedicated to eliminating racism and empowering women. Since 1907, YWCA Bellingham has offered safe housing for women.

Our emergency housing, permanent supportive housing, and senior housing programs are available for unaccompanied adult women in Whatcom County, and are supported through a combination of resident program fees, grants from public and private sources, and other community contributions. Women come to us for many different reasons, but the goal for each is the same: YWCA Bellingham aims to give women

a safe, supportive place to stay while connecting them with the appropriate resources they need to ultimately become self-supporting. The YWCA Larrabee Residence Program provides housing for 41 women in our historic landmark building at Forest and Maple Streets in Bellingham.

From May 15 through May 31, the JCPenney Bellingham Salon is partnering with YWCA Bellingham to host a community donation drive supporting individuals and families experiencing homelessness in Whatcom County, including children and seniors.

Community support makes a direct and meaningful impact. Donations help provide comfort, dignity, and essential care items to neighbors who are navigating some of the most difficult moments in their lives. Every contribution helps ensure that local families have access to basic needs and a reminder that they are not alone.

We are currently accepting:
• Canned and nonperishable food items
• New hygiene products and hair care items for all types of hair
• New or gently used clothing for women/gender-neutral and children

Donation drop off is located at the men’s checkout counter near the salon:
10 Bellis Fair Parkway, Bellingham, WA

Store hours:
Monday through Saturday: 11:00 AM – 7:00 PM
Sunday: 12:00 PM – 6:00 PM

Together, small acts of generosity create real change right here in our community.

Today, we celebrate Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu, a Native Hawaiian educator, cultural practitioner, filmmaker, and proud māhū leader whose work continues to uplift Indigenous identity, language, and community. In Native Hawaiian culture, māhū people have existed and been respected within communities for generations, often recognized as valued caretakers, teachers, and cultural leaders.
As a transgender Native Hawaiian woman, Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu has used her voice and visibility to advocate for acceptance, cultural preservation, and belonging for future generations. Her leadership reflects the heart of YWCA’s mission: creating a world where every person is valued, empowered, and able to live authentically and safely as themselves.

In the spring and summer of 1988, Gloria Chun Hoo was a key player in the YWCA USA new logo design. It was the era of YWCA celebrating new beginnings with the implementation of the sunrise logo that ran from 1989 to 2004. It was a defining moment that created persimmon as our signature color. Thank you Gloria Chun Hoo for shaping YWCA.

Celebrate Mother’s Day by showing care in a meaningful way 💐
This year, YWCA Bellingham invites you to give comfort, dignity, and support to women, mothers, and senior women in our community. Through our Mother’s Day Donation Drive, you can help create small but powerful moments of care for those rebuilding their lives.

Donations like hygiene essentials, cozy comfort items, and gentle self-care products remind the women we serve that they are seen, valued, and supported.

Join us in honoring every mother, by giving with intention.

As YWCA Bellingham joins YWCA USA in recognizing 25 years of Sexual Assault Awareness, we are reminded that safety and housing are deeply connected. In Washington State, 45% of women report experiencing sexual violence in their lifetime, and thousands of survivors seek support each year. [Source: Washington Coalition of Sexual Assault Programs]

For those experiencing homelessness, the risk is significantly higher. Sexual violence is both a cause of housing instability and a reality of living without safe shelter.

At YWCA Bellingham, we work to interrupt that cycle. Through emergency shelter and permanent supportive housing, we provide safe, stable spaces for survivors and others facing housing insecurity. Your support helps ensure that safety, dignity, and long-term stability are within reach for our community.

We recently had the honor of hosting our first Young Women with Bright Futures Scholarship ceremony, celebrating three remarkable women in our community: Chloe, Logan, and Jolie. Each recipient not only received a scholarship from YWCA Bellingham, but also took the stage to share powerful, inspiring speeches that reflected their resilience, leadership, and vision for the future. Their voices were a strong reminder of why it is essential to invest in and uplift women as they pursue their goals and contribute to community.

This event was made possible through the dedication of our Scholarship Committee, made up of both community members and staff, who thoughtfully reviewed applications and supported this inaugural program. We are also grateful to Calypso Kitchen for providing a beautiful lunch, Elizabeth Willis for setting the tone with her piano performance, and Slice of Heaven Bakery & Cafe for the wonderful desserts that helped make the celebration feel so special.

If you’re wanting to help the next generation of women in our community, please donate through our website [www.ywcabellingham.org] with the note ‘Scholarship Program’ or call us to discuss how you can help!
