From a standout career at Texas A&M and in Major League Baseball to leading the Bulldogs to a TAPPS State Championship in 2023, Coach Tyner continues to make an incredible impact on our baseball program. We’re proud to have him leading our Dawgs!

⚾FROM BEAUMONT TO THE BIG LEAGUES: THE STORY OF JASON TYNER⚾

Jason Tyner’s baseball story didn’t just start early — it started unrealistically early.

Tyner was swinging a bat almost as soon as he could walk. By age 5, he was already demonstrating a rare baseball IQ — and according to family accounts, he executed an unassisted triple play in T-ball at age 5… and did it again at age 6. A feat so rare it’s only happened 15 times in MLB history — and he did it before elementary school.

• 119 career stolen bases (Texas A&M record at the time)
• 307 career hits (school record at the time)
• 41 stolen bases in a single season (A&M record)
• 1st Round MLB Draft Pick (21st overall, 1998 – New York Mets)
• 31 stolen bases in 2001 (Tampa Bay club record at the time)
• 390 MLB games played
• 1 career MLB home run (352 feet)
• 12+ professional seasons across 6 MLB organizations

A West Brook High School standout and 1995 District MVP, Tyner went on to become one of the most decorated players in Texas A&M history, earning Big 12 MVP honors in 1998 and starring for Team USA.

One of the greatest leadoff hitters in Aggie history, Tyner was a magician when it came to bunting the baseball. Routine ground balls turned into infield singles with his great speed. Tyner still holds multiple A&M records including most hits in a season (107), most stolen bases in a season (41) and most career stolen bases (118). He was also named to the Big 12 Conference 10th Anniversary team in 2006.

In the majors, Tyner carved out a reputation as one of baseball’s purest speed threats — a sparkplug outfielder who could change a game with one swing of the bat or one stolen base.

He made his MLB debut in 2000 with the Mets, where he immediately delivered — going 2-for-3 off Hall of Famer Mike Mussina. He would go on to steal bases, score runs, and impact lineups with the Mets, Devil Rays, Twins, and multiple other organizations.

But his influence didn’t stop at the field.

Tyner later returned to Southeast Texas, where he became a coach, mentor, and program builder — eventually leading Monsignor Kelly Catholic to a TAPPS State Championship in 2023 and reaching 100 career coaching wins in 2026. He was inducted into the Texas A&M Athletic Hall of Fame and Museum of the Gulf Coast Sports Hall of Fame.

From Little League phenom… to first-round draft pick… to MLB veteran… to championship coach — Jason Tyner’s journey is one of the most complete baseball stories to ever come out of Southeast Texas.

From a nine-year Major League Baseball career to his induction into the Cape Cod Baseball League Hall of Fame, Coach Petkovsek has an impressive baseball legacy, and we’re proud to have him on our coaching staff!

⚾PITCHING HIS WAY TO HISTORY: THE STORY OF KELLY ALUM MARK PETKOVSEK⚾

Few Southeast Texas athletes have traveled a baseball journey quite like Monsignor Kelly alum Mark Petkovsek.

After starring at Kelly and attending the University of Texas, Petkovsek became a first-round MLB Draft pick by the Texas Rangers in 1987 and went on to enjoy a nine-year Major League career with the Rangers, Pirates, Cardinals and Angels.

His resume is filled with remarkable accomplishments. Petkovsek threw no-hitters at both the NCAA and AAA levels, compiled a 14-4 record in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League, and was later inducted into the Cape Cod Baseball League Hall of Fame in 2016.

One of Petkovsek’s greatest professional accomplishments came in 1994 with the Tucson Toros, the then AAA affiliate of the Houston Astros. Petkovsek threw a no-hitter against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox – the first in Toro’s history while earning PCL Pitcher of the Week.

Another highlight of his professional career came with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1996. Petkovsek posted a career-best 11-2 record, helped the Cardinals capture the National League Central title, and made seven postseason appearances. He also authored a memorable complete-game shutout against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the playoffs, a rare feat on baseball's biggest stage.

In all, Petkovsek made 396 Major League appearances, finished with a 46-28 record, and left his mark on the game at every level. After his playing career, he returned home and helped develop the next generation of talent as head coach and pitching coach at Monsignor Kelly Catholic High School.

From Beaumont to the bright lights of Major League Baseball, Mark Petkovsek's story remains one of Southeast Texas' greatest baseball success stories. ⚾🏆

Our Theology II students wrapped up their unit on Jesus as True God and True Man by creating their own rosaries! Inspired by St. Dominic’s defense of the faith, this special project brought joy and grace to both Sister and her students.

Our Aquatic Science students took learning beyond the classroom with a visit to the Wallisville Lake Project!

Partnering with the American Bird Conservancy’s SPLASh program, students collected data on marine debris while exploring the birds, reptiles, and fish that call these aquatic habitats home.

Together, our 23 Bulldogs removed an impressive 107.56 pounds of trash from the area! A great day of hands-on learning and making a difference in our Texas waterways!
