This letter will be sent to universities, Politicians and larger non profit organizations.
ThisMy name is Percy Pitzer, founder of Creative Corrections, LLC and the Pitzer Family Education Foundation.
I spent 29 years keeping individuals behind the fence and the past 15 years working to keep individuals from going behind the fence. During my career, I served 25 years with the Federal Bureau of Prisons, including serving as Warden at three federal institutions, and later served as Warden at two private correctional facilities.
Through those experiences, I have gained a unique perspective on our criminal justice system and the challenges it faces. I truly believe our nation is in desperate need of meaningful prison reform. People who commit crimes must be held accountable for their actions, but common sense must also be applied. Accountability and rehabilitation should work hand in hand.
Today, our correctional system faces significant challenges, including overcrowding, staffing shortages, rising costs, and increasing safety concerns for both staff and inmates. In my opinion, the current state of corrections is unsustainable and must be addressed before conditions worsen further.
For the past 15 years, I have focused much of my effort on prevention, education, and helping individuals avoid incarceration altogether. Through the Pitzer Family Education Foundation, we provide educational opportunities for children impacted by parental incarceration and assist returning citizens with training and job placement.
Prison reform should not be viewed as a political issue. It is a public safety issue, a fiscal responsibility issue, and a human issue. I believe it is time for an honest national conversation about the future of corrections in America.
Thank you for your time and for your work in this important field. I would welcome the opportunity to exchange ideas and discuss potential solutions to the challenges facing corrections today.
Respectfully,
Percy Pitzer
