For every one child raised by relatives in foster care, roughly 19 children are raised by kin outside the foster care system. This means they don’t have access to monthly stipends, free resources, a community of partners, counseling, support groups, and more. We are grateful to the Mustang Cat Charitable Foundation for their generous support of Buckner Children and Family Services in Beaumont.

Because of their support, Buckner will continue strengthening children and families through programs that provide safe and loving homes for children in foster care, support young adults transitioning out of care, and equip parents and fathers with tools to build stable, nurturing families.

This funding will help create brighter futures for vulnerable children and families in Southeast Texas—offering not only support for today, but hope for tomorrow.

Dads, you are the first male influencer in your child's life. Your baby will learn from you throughout his childhood. Parenting can be hard, especially when you are becoming a first-time father. Parenting can also become difficult if you are facing other life challenges that are negatively impacting your family.

Kinship care allows children to be placed with relatives after being removed from the home. Kinship care is always the first choice because it is proven that kids have better success rates when they are with people they know. Kinship care also allows foster parents to receive financial help, resources, community, and more so that they can care for the children. So often families walk this road alone. Buckner wants to help empower you so children can remain with their relatives and begin to thrive in a stable, loving environment.

Right now, there are over 500 children over the age of 13 waiting for adoption. These are kids who, by no fault of their own, need a safe place to call home. The statistics are staggering for youth who age out of foster care, but loving families can make a difference.

This last Saturday, our Buckner postadoption team along with our East Texas adoption team held a TBRI Family Fun Event at the Ellen Trout Zoo in Lufkin thanks to the Region 5 Heart Gallery of Southeast Texas grant.

They were able to lead a training on Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI), an attachment-based, trauma-informed intervention that is designed to meet the needs of children who have come from hard places. This training provides our caregivers the practical tools to see the “whole child” in their care and help each child we work with to feel valued and seen.

A huge thank you to Longview and Lufkin foster care teams and the Buckner Center for Humanitarian Aid and we look forward to hosting similar events in partnership with Heart Gallery in the future!

In Texas, more than 1,000 youth age out of foster care each year.

When youth age out of the foster care system between 18 to 23 years old, they are vulnerable to addiction, human trafficking and homelessness. With little support, former foster youth are left to navigate from adolescence to adulthood on their own.

For National Youth Aging Out Day, you can help by fostering or adopting a teen through Waiting Texas Children and providing mentorship for youth who may not have a positive person in their life.
