Here's your Hidden In History update! This morning's image was a close-up of a rotating beacon from the Lake Jackson Airport!

The Lake Jackson Airport opened on January 6, 1956. In 1960 this beacon was placed on the hangar. Although the Lake Jackson Airport (previously located at the intersection of Highway 332 and Lake Road) no longer exists, it had a fascinating history, including the landing of a hijacked plane in 1972.

Come see the beacon in person at the Lake Jackson Historical Museum! You can even flip the switch on the display to turn it on.

We are excited to welcome Sarah Page from the Texas Historical Commission (THC) as a speaker at the upcoming SETMA Conference on November 2, 2026, at the Lake Jackson Historical Museum.

The Texas Historical Commission is the state agency for historic preservation, working to protect and preserve the places, structures, landscapes, objects, and stories that shape the history of Texas.

Through its programs and partnerships, the THC supports museums, historic sites, heritage organizations, communities, and preservation professionals across the state. Its work includes historic resource surveys, National Register nominations, preservation planning, technical assistance, grants and funding opportunities, education and training, heritage tourism, archeology, architectural preservation, and community development.

As Texas’ State Historic Preservation Office, the THC also plays an important role in administering federal preservation programs and helping communities identify, document, protect, and make meaningful use of their historic resources.

We look forward to learning more from Sarah Page about the resources, programs, and opportunities the Texas Historical Commission provides to museums and heritage organizations throughout Texas.

We are excited to welcome **Humanities Texas** as a participating organization at the upcoming **SETMA One-Day Museum Conference** on November 2, 2026.
