Project JumpStart, Inc. Baltimore nonprofit organization providing real construction training that leads to real opportunity.

Project JumpStart began in 2006 as an effort to provide opportunities in the construction trades to Baltimore City residents. We offer a 14-week construction-training program for Baltimore City residents with a high school diploma or GED. Experienced teachers help students understand job readiness and prepare for success on the construction site. Students also receive essential safety training, financial coaching, a stipend, and driver’s education. More than 80% of our graduates are placed in construction jobs, with many leading to solid careers in the construction industry. Project JumpStart also serves contractors by referring only well-screened, job-ready candidates to meet their entry-level hiring needs.

What does it take to turn training into a trade?

For Darius, the answer is an Electrical Apprenticeship.

Darius is stepping into hands-on, on-the-job training in low-voltage electrical and fire alarm systems. His work will include cable pulls, device and equipment installation, material handling, and daily worksite preparation, all built on a strong foundation of safety, proper tool use and care, daily work briefings, and continued apprentice training.

Apprenticeship is where preparation becomes a career. It gives graduates the chance to earn while they learn, build real skills on real jobsites, and keep growing in their trade.

Outcomes like this take a full team: instructors, case managers, employment services staff, and industry partners who believe in giving new talent a strong start. Thank you to everyone who helped prepare Darius and connect him with this opportunity.

Five women walked across the stage at Project JumpStart's most recent graduation.

That matters in an industry where women now make up 11.3% of the construction workforce, a 20-year high, but hold only about 4% of hands-on trade roles.

The Class 86 graduates trained in the same hands-on curriculum as every other graduate. They earned OSHA 10 and First Aid/CPR credentials, completed 87 hours of job readiness training, and built real skills with real tools. They are prepared, motivated, and ready to work.

The industry keeps asking where its next skilled workers will come from. Part of the answer is a talent pool many companies have not fully tapped.

We are excited to announce that Dante has officially been placed with Allan Myers and will begin his new position on August 31!

Dante will be joining Allan Myers as a laborer, where he will gain hands-on experience within the heavy civil construction industry. His responsibilities will include assisting with the installation of interior piping, concrete drilling and demolition, rigging and moving heavy materials, cutting metal and pipe, erecting scaffolding, operating equipment, and supporting various construction installations.

The position offers an hourly range of $24–$27 based on experience, along with benefits and opportunities for continued training and advancement within the company.

What makes Dante’s placement even more exciting is the story behind how he got there.

During Project JumpStart’s East Side Class 85, we had a representative from Allan Myers visit as a guest speaker. Dante made an impression that day by actively participating, asking questions, and taking notes. Later, when Dante advanced to the final round of interviews with Allan Myers, that same representative was part of his interview process and remembered him.

The representative shared that after meeting Class 85, if there was anyone from the class he hoped would apply to Allan Myers, it was Dante.

Dante’s experience is a great example of why we encourage our students to treat every employer visit, classroom presentation, and networking opportunity as part of the interview process. His engagement in the classroom helped him stand out before he ever formally interviewed for the position.

Congratulations to Project JumpStart Class 86!

These graduates gave up evenings, early mornings, and plenty of comfort zones to get here. Over the course of the program, they earned OSHA 10 and First Aid/CPR credentials, completed 87 hours of job readiness training, and built hands-on construction skills on real projects.

They are ready to step onto the jobsite and keep learning.

Thank you to our instructors, staff, employer partners, and supporters who helped make this day possible. And to the families who cheered them on, this one is yours too.

Meet Instructor Steve, standing next to one of our electrical training walls.

Before students ever step onto a real job, they are running wire, setting boxes, and learning the basic electrical skills and techniques they'll encounter in the field.

We’re very excited to celebrate Elijah Brown, who took the initiative to apply for an opportunity with Colonial Electric after seeing it on our job posting. Elijah did so well during the interview process that things moved very quickly, and he was able to start working that same week!

Elijah was hired through Outsource as an Electrical Helper for a warehouse electrical project in Frederick, Maryland. This is an exciting opportunity for him to begin gaining hands-on experience and putting the skills he developed through Project JumpStart into practice.

Both of these placements highlight what we want to continue seeing from our students: taking initiative, building relationships, making strong impressions, and turning their training into real employment opportunities.

We are extremely excited for Dante and Elijah as they begin this next chapter, and we look forward to continuing to celebrate their growth and success!

Project JumpStart, Inc. is grateful to recognize D. Yvette Diamond as she prepares to transition from her role as Director of Operations.

Over the past several years, Yvette has played a significant role in Project JumpStart, Inc.'s growth as an independent organization. Her work has helped strengthen our operational systems, data and reporting infrastructure, grant management, partnerships, and organizational capacity. She has consistently challenged us to think critically, improve our processes, and build systems that can support our mission for years to come.

While Yvette will be stepping away from her day-to-day role, we anticipate that she will remain connected to selected strategic initiatives where her experience, relationships, and expertise can continue to contribute.

We are deeply grateful for the foundation Yvette helped build and for her commitment to Project JumpStart, Inc., our students, our industry partners, and the Baltimore community.
