Maryland Student Legislature

The voice of Maryland's college and university students since 1989

Founded in 1989, the Maryland Student Legislature is an intercollegiate organization that prepares students for lives of public service through a model legislature, speaker series, networking events, and other activities. MSL students learn to write legislation, develop public speaking skills, and build a network of politically active young people from across the state.

As we transition into a new Council of State team led by Governor Daramola and Lt. Governor Cave, we are looking to expand our team to help spread and improve MSL!

We are seeking appointments for Secretary of State, Attorney General, Comptroller, and the Communications Team!!

MSL is deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of our founder, Troy Simmons. Troy was the driving force behind MSL for nearly two decades. A native of North Carolina, Troy participated in the North Carolina Student Legislature as an undergraduate, and he brought that idea with him when he arrived as a graduate student at the University of Maryland, College Park. Without his vision and his tireless work ethic, MSL would not exist today. We mourn his passing and extend our sincerest condolences to his loved ones.

WELCOME TO SPRING 🌺🌸

We are so excited to announce our second DC day for the year! As of now, we are visiting Brendan Flynn from Senator Van Hollen’s Office and having lunch with the New Lens Institute. We are also coordinating with Angela Alsobrook and Kweisi Mfume’s office! This is an amazing opportunity for students looking to visit DC, network, and get insider insights into public service :)

⭐️ On February 5th, over 40 students attended Maryland Student Legislature’s 2026 Shadow Day. ⭐️
Students got the opportunity to shadow a Delegate or Senator, and see what it’s like up close to be a member of the Maryland General Assembly.
Shadowing gives our members the chance to talk to their legislative members one on one to learn more about how our legislative process works and who’s involved.
Thank you to all the students who attended and to all of the Senators and Delegates who gave their time to share their experience with our students.
