Jesuit Volunteer Corps Give us one year, and we'll give you a sense of purpose to guide every year that follows. or internationally.

Jesuit Volunteer Corps matches young leaders in roles providing vital service for 1-2 years with an organization serving people in need in the U.S. Jesuit Volunteers live in an intentional community with other volunteers, build deep relationships, and gain valuable professional experience while fostering personal growth as leaders committed to faith in action. JVs engage in a year or two of service, framed within four core values of the Jesuit tradition: spirituality, simple lifestyle, community, and social justice. JVC incorporates five programmatic retreats and mentorship from local and national staff to create an experience that further prepares you for a future fighting for what matters. This formation program equips Jesuit Volunteers with a set of leadership tools and access to a network of over 11,000 accomplished alumni supporters. The Jesuit Volunteer Corps draws inspiration and direction from the Society of Jesus, a Roman Catholic order of priests and brothers. Better known as the “Jesuits,” the order was founded almost 500 years ago by St. Ignatius of Loyola, who challenged others to live as “contemplatives in action,” balancing between reflective prayer and work for justice.

"Hello JVC Nation! My name is Delaney Hayden, and I spent this past year as a Jesuit Volunteer and paralegal at the Immigration Outreach Service Center in Baltimore. Little moments with clients, coworkers, and JVC friends, including serving Friday dinners with our St. Vincent de Paul’s faith family, were blessings. The power and beauty of our shared humanity as children of God were alive in every community that welcomed us. Fr. Greg Boyle’s idea of a circle of compassion with no one outside it captures JVC’s mission. Forever grateful, I carry everyone and every moment in my heart every day."

Delaney is generously serving as one of our FJV Ambassadors this year while settling into her first year of law school at Syracuse University. Check out JVC’s LinkedIn page for more insights on the program from Delaney and other recent volunteers - and stay tuned for future content!

In JVC, we often talk about “Faith That Does Justice" as a central idea within Catholic Social Teaching (CST) and Jesuit spirituality. But what does that mean?

At the core, it's about acknowledging faith as far more than an inner belief - and something that calls us toward outward, compassionate action. Faith shapes how we show up for others and work for systemic justice. Faith That Does Justice is faith in action, with community.

Wherever you are on your journey, JVC provides the space, community, and experiences that allow you to ask the hard questions and better define what faith in action might mean in your own life during a service year... and well beyond.

Applications for the 2027-28 service year are open! Visit https://jesuitvolunteers.org/ to learn more.

September’s FJV spotlight is Dr. Steph Edwards!

Steph graduated from Santa Clara University in 2007, and served as a Jesuit Volunteer in New Orleans from 2007-2008. She later attended the Boston University Schools of Theology and Social Work (MTS, MSW) and Boston College (PhD). She is now the Executive Director of the Boston Theological Interreligious Consortium, as well as a Lecturer at Boston College and author. Read on to hear more about her journey as a JV!

“When I entered SCU I had no idea what a Jesuit was, much less what it meant to embrace a life of service grounded in Catholic Social Teaching. By the time I finished my undergrad, the four values of JVC summarized exactly the type of life I wanted for myself. Then, as now, they are central to who and how I want to be in the world.“
“Post-Katrina New Orleans was hard for solid “placements.” I worked with the local branch of the SEIU through Interfaith Worker Justice on wage theft in reconstruction efforts, helped run short-term volunteer groups through the Jesuit province, and ended up spending at least one day a week at the Harry Tompson Center (2007-2008)”

“As a JV, I learned too many things to name but what comes to mind right now is how joy and tragedy can both be fully true at the same time. In New Orleans I learned how to cultivate moments of celebration even in the midst of some of the most radically unjust and horrific moments. Even in 2007, two years after the storm, very little of the city had even been demolished yet, so we shared a street with FEMA trailers, and the back of our neighbors’ house was fully ripped off, revealing a rotting yet perfectly preserved version of their home. Yet most every night something unexpected and beautiful would disrupt the work of the day: a kid practicing his trumpet, an impromptu parade, or an invite to free food at the corner pub. It was a year of feeling my way through holding silliness and sadness at the same time.”
