Adult Learning Center

Adult Learning Center CLOSED
For 30 years, Adult Learning Center has provided free classes in Adult Basic Education (ABE), GED, and English Language Acquisition (ELA).

When adults learn to read and write, it changes their lives. For more than 30 years, Strong City Baltimore’s Adult Learning Center has provided classes in Adult Basic Education (ABE) and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), as well as citizenship preparation to Baltimore residents, all at no cost. We are now the second-largest citywide provider of basic skills training in ABE (reading,

writing, and math) and ESOL. Adults with language and math skills are more employable, more civically engaged, and more involved with their children’s education. The ALC is a truly citywide program, where every year 600 adults – both native-born and immigrants – from every corner of Baltimore work to realize their potential as productive citizens. In a city where an estimated 123,000 adults do not have a high school diploma, and still more lack the basic literacy skills to succeed in life and work, the ALC is filling an urgent need. The Adult Learning Center offers programs in two critical areas:

Adult Basic Education – instruction for individuals without a high-school diploma and those in need of basic skills training in reading, writing, and math

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) – English language instruction for non-native speakers

The Adult Learning Center is located at 3501 North Charles Street, Baltimore, MD 21218. We are in the lower level of the University Baptist Church. Directions can be found here. Other class sites are available. Interested individuals should call us at (410) 261-3524 for more information. If you are interested in volunteering at the ALC, please call 410-261-3519 or email us at [email protected].

Our Story

When adults improve their basic skills, it changes their lives.

For nearly 30 years, the Adult Learning Center has provided classes in Adult Basic Education (ABE) and English Language Acquisition (ELA/ESL/ESOL) to Baltimore residents, all at no cost to the learner.

Adults with language and math skills are more employable, more engaged in civic life, and more involved with their children’s education.

Every year, 600 native-born and immigrant adults from every corner of Baltimore work to empower themselves, personally and professionally, through skills-based, learner-centered education. In Baltimore 100,000 adults do not have a high school diploma as well as lack basic literacy skills, and 17,000 speak English less than very well; the city will only reach its full potential when all residents have access to high-quality, fully-funded adult continuing education.
