Families, educators, and community groups gathered on Thursday, May 14, at Austin Community College’s Highland Business Center to learn about and share best practices for supporting emergent bilingual students in Central Texas.

According to the Texas Education Agency, one in four students in the region is emergent bilingual.

E3 Alliance launched the Emergent Bilingual Steering Committee in 2022 in partnership with local school districts, colleges, and community groups to improve academic outcomes for this growing student population.

Our Director of Systems Alignment Heather Salaz reflected on the significance of the work led by the committee.

“This effort represents the collective impact of school districts, community partners, and families working together to strengthen outcomes for emergent bilingual students,” she said.

As a result of this multiyear collaboration, E3 Alliance will be releasing a report later this summer that details the committee’s work, research, and recommendations for district leadership, educators, community partners, and families.

In the meantime, you can learn more about the May 14 event and read the upcoming report’s executive summary here: https://e3alliance.org/about/news/families-educators-share-strategies-to-support-emergent-bilingual-students/

E3 Alliance is thankful for the educators and community partners who joined us on May 19 at Austin Community College’s Make It Center to kick off a new collaboration focused on increasing kindergarten readiness and pre-K enrollment in Central Texas.

This work is crucial because only about five in every 10 children in the region enter kindergarten with the foundational skills needed for academic success. Participating in pre-K programs, which support early literacy, numeracy, and social-emotional skills, lay the groundwork for students’ success and sustained academic achievement throughout their educational journey.

However, E3 Alliance data finds more eligible students could be participating in pre-K programs. In 2025, for example, just 16% of eligible students in Central Texas were enrolled in a public pre-K3 program. This figure shows that we have the opportunity to raise awareness about the availability and benefits of pre-K programs in our communities.

We’re excited to partner with schools, families, and other community groups to spread the word about available resources and to ensure students are kindergarten ready so they can thrive from cradle to career.

Members of the E3 Alliance Operations Team are feeling energized after the SHRM Talent 2026 conference last month!

Our Senior Director of Operations Christie Hepburn and Operations Manager Emily Pickens attended the Dallas event, which brought together HR leaders to share and learn about best practices.

They returned from the conference equipped with the latest research on retention, strategies for building a strong team culture that values employees, and insight into how to conduct skills-first interviews. This will help E3 Alliance continue to improve how we hire, onboard, grow and support the people who make the organization what it is.

It’s been one week since E3 Alliance celebrated its 20th anniversary and our ongoing commitment to ensuring all Texas students have the opportunity to thrive.

The milestone became even more meaningful when State Rep. Donna Howard, D-Austin, presented our Founder and President Emeritus, Susan Dawson, with a resolution honoring E3 Alliance’s work as a nonpartisan nonprofit that uses data to strengthen education systems.

“For the last 20 years, E3 Alliance has influenced and changed public education policy in Texas, and our state and our community are better for it,” Howard said.
