LATE NIGHT VIEWS. Austin Firefighters recently responded downtown after a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle, suffering a serious injury. Fire crews quickly provided emergency medical care and transferred the patient to EMS for transport to the hospital.
We love seeing people out enjoying Austin’s downtown core, but busy streets still come with serious risks. High-speed traffic, distracted driving, and heavy congestion can change lives in an instant.
Whether you’re walking, biking, or driving, staying alert matters. Looking out for one another helps keep our community safer.
If you see an emergency while in our beautiful city, call 911. We’ll be there.

COORDINATION TO SAVE LIVES. Austin firefighters recently joined first responders from across multiple states for the Texas Search and Rescue Exercise (SAREX) in San Antonio — a large-scale training focused on airborne rescue operations during natural disasters.
AFD Special Operations Rescue Swimmers, working alongside Austin Police Air Support as part of the Helicopter Search and Rescue Team (HART), trained with 52 different units and nearly two dozen aircraft, completing hundreds of practice rescue missions throughout the day.
These exercises are critical in preparing our firefighters for the moments when lives depend on fast, coordinated rescue efforts.

We’re proud of the dedication, skill, and professionalism Austin firefighters continue to bring to every training and every emergency response.

HELP US FIND ANSWERS. A piece of Austin’s heart was lost this morning.
The beloved Pease Park troll sculpture, “Malin’s Fountain,” was destroyed in a fire early Thursday morning. Austin firefighters responded quickly, but due to the difficult access to the site, after multiple attempts, crews were unable to save the structure.
Built in 2024 by internationally known artist Thomas Dambo alongside more than 150 volunteers, Malin’s Fountain was more than just a sculpture — it was a symbol of creativity, community, and connection. The only Thomas Dambo troll in Texas, Malin brought thousands of Austinites together and became a treasured part of Pease Park.
Now, we’re asking for the community’s help.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. If you saw anything suspicious or have any information that could help investigators, please call 1-877-434-7345. Information leading to an arrest may qualify for a reward of up to $1,000.
This sculpture was built by the community, for the community. Help us find answers for everyone who loved and cared for Malin.

Honoring a Life of Service, Courage, and Sacrifice.

Harold Kelly, a nearly 20-year veteran of the Austin Fire Department and a cherished member of our fire family.
Harold dedicated his life to serving this city and the people around him. Even while facing an unimaginable battle with ALS, he continued to show the same courage, strength, and heart that defined his fire service career. From his first symptoms in 2024 to seeking treatment in Canada earlier this year, Harold fought with everything he had.
Over the past several days, many firefighters had the opportunity to sit beside Harold, share stories, laugh, reflect, and remind him just how much he meant to all of us. He remained surrounded by the love of his family, friends, and his firefighter family until the very end.
Lieutenant Kelly leaves behind his wife, Melanie, and his sons, Colton and Christian. Our hearts are with them as they navigate this unimaginable loss.
Harold’s impact on this department will not be forgotten. His dedication to the job, his strength during adversity, and the bond he shared with his crews in Prevention and Battalion 2 will continue to live on through all of us.
Please keep the Kelly family, Harold’s friends, and all those who loved him in your thoughts during this difficult time.
Rest easy, brother. We’ll take it from here.

AUSTIN FIREFIGHTERS THANK AUSTIN POLICE IN QUICK ARRESTS FOLLOWING SHOOTINGS AT AFD STATIONS AND ACROSS AUSTIN TODAY

The immediate, active threat, to our city has passed. Fire stations have ended their lockdown, the South Austin shelter-in-place was lifted, and two suspects are now in custody. Our thoughts and hearts go out to the victims of today’s senseless violence, to their families, friends, and to all traumatized by the threats of the day.

Austin firefighters join a grateful city in our thanks to our colleagues with Austin Police, Manor Police, Travis County Sheriff’s Office, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and every other law enforcement agency that assisted APD in the investigation and arrests.

We encourage our community to always report any suspicious activity, but to also remember that whenever you call, for whatever you need…Austin’s firefighters, police officers, and EMS professionals will be there. The City of Austin tip line remains open to anyone who may have additional information regarding a possible third, yet unconfirmed, subject. Please call 512-472-8477, your tip may be confidential and anonymous.

The Austin Firefighters Association is aware of two separate incidents in which Austin fire stations were struck by gunfire, one late last night and another this morning, and multiple shootings across the city. In both AFD station shootings, no firefighters were injured with only minor damage reported to at least one fire apparatus and both fire stations.

At this time, AFD Command Staff has not changed the response model and Austin firefighters are fully staffed, operational, and responding to multiple shootings across the city.

“Austin firefighters are continuing to answer every call for help, just as we always do,” said David Girouard, President of the Austin Firefighters Association. “Our members are continuing to respond city-wide to other reported shootings and to care for victims. While our station doors are locked, our crews remain in full force responding to every call to serve our city and respond to our community without hesitation.”

“Based on current information Austin Firefighters strongly encourage all members of the community to be extra vigilant and alert. The investigation is in its infancy as the situation across the city remains active and is continuing to unfold. EVERYDAY EMERGENCY. Late Wednesday night, Austin firefighters responded to an incident at the Le Med Apartment Homes in Central Austin after a truck crashed directly into an occupied apartment building, causing a significant gas leak and forcing multiple evacuations.
While thankfully no residents were inside the impacted apartment and no injuries were reported, this call required far more than just putting water on a fire.
Firefighters immediately went to work securing the area, evacuating residents, monitoring dangerous gas levels, assessing structural integrity, and coordinating closely with Austin Police, Texas Gas Service, and building management to protect everyone involved. In incidents like this, every second matters. A gas leak inside a residential building can quickly turn into a life-threatening situation if not handled properly.
This is where the specialized training of Austin firefighters becomes critical. Crews used hazardous materials response skills to detect and monitor the gas leak, technical rescue and scene stabilization training to evaluate the damaged structure, and incident command coordination to safely manage evacuations and multiple agencies operating at once.
These are the kinds of calls most people never expect to happen — but they’re exactly why your firefighters train constantly for complex emergencies beyond fires alone.
Because protecting our community means being ready for anything at any hour.
Stay Safe, Austin.

WILDFIRE PREPAREDNESS MONTH. May is Wildfire Preparedness Month, and your Austin firefighters are already hard at work preparing for what could become another dangerous wildfire season in Central Texas.
Wildfire preparedness isn’t just about fighting fires once they start — it’s about preventing them before they happen. Across our city and surrounding communities, firefighters are training on wildfire response tactics, inspecting equipment, reviewing evacuation plans, and working alongside partner agencies to stay ready for rapidly changing conditions.
But preparedness takes all of us.
As temperatures rise and vegetation dries out, small actions can make a big difference. Clearing dry brush around your home, avoiding outdoor burning during high-risk conditions, properly extinguishing campfires, and staying aware of burn bans are all ways the public can help reduce wildfire risk.
Austin firefighters are proud to serve this community, and we’re asking everyone to take part in protecting our neighborhoods, green spaces, and families this month.
Preparedness saves lives. Prevention protects communities. Let’s get wildfire ready together.

CLEARING THE WAY. Last night’s storms left a mess across Austin, but before most people were even starting their morning, your Austin firefighters were already out in the neighborhoods getting roads cleared and communities moving again.
Crews spent hours cutting up and removing massive downed trees from roadways so families could safely get home, emergency vehicles could get through, and neighborhoods could reconnect after the storm.
This job is about a lot more than fighting fires. It’s about showing up for this city however we’re needed — in the middle of the night, in the rain, chainsaws running, doing the work that helps keep Austin moving.
We’re proud of the firefighters who continue to serve this community in every kind of emergency.

The Austin Firefighters Association today announced its endorsement of former Austin City Council Member Kathie Tovo for State Representative in the Democratic runoff election.

“Kathie Tovo brings serious understanding, respect, and a clear command of the issues that matter to Austin firefighters and to the families of House District 49,” AFA President David Girouard said. “Her record shows both compassion to care and a readiness to work hard and deliver accountability through meaningful process reforms so the system works better for Austin families, and our Austin firefighters.”

Austin Firefighters remember Tovo’s long record of public service, her detailed understanding of key public safety issues, and her commitment to working families during her tenure on City Council. “Kathie Tovo has been there for Austin’s firefighters and fought for public safety when it counted most,” said Carlo Anguiano, AFA VP - Director of Legislative and Political Affairs. “In this runoff, our members see her as the candidate who will listen to the facts, respect our profession, and work toward practical solutions that protect all Texans, while delivering fairness and good governance for everyone in HD 49.”

The AFA Political Action Committee emphasizes that its support for Tovo is rooted not only in her unique and exceptional qualifications for this campaign, but also in her broader, long-standing history of standing with firefighters and public safety in Austin. The AFA remembers her role in their efforts such as Care for Carrie, her support for the Four For Austin initiative, and her consistent advocacy for A Safer Austin programs, propositions, and investments. VP Anguiano continued, “from stations and staffing to occupational cancer protections and funding for peer support, Kathie Tovo has fought to make Austin safer, and we believe that she will bring that same fire to the Texas Capitol for HD49.”

The Austin Firefighters Association encourages all eligible voters in Texas House District 49 to vote early May 18th-22nd and reminds everyone that election day is May 26, 2026.
