The Blvd District is a business district in Austin, Texas. from I-35 up to Lamar Blvd. is the Bvld District. Why "the Blvd District"? This great part of Austin, Texas slowly got the reputation of a place to avoid, a ghetto. This perception mainly came from the decline of Highland Mall which is at it's center. Things change and so has the area. A new "formed based code" is being applied to the area
(form based means that the building code will be based on the shape of the buildings allowed in the area). This "form based code" along with Federal funding is prompting a revitalization of the area. For instance, all of Highland Mall has been purchased by Austin Community College (ACC). ACC plans to transform the entire mall into a campus. Doing this more than doubles the square footage of all of ACC. In addition, almost entire parking lot of this ACC Highalnd Campus will be transformed into mixed use Residential and Office space. The first phase which includes a math emporium, student union and student library is set to be completed in the Fall of 2014 and will serve 6000 students. There was a need to give the area an identity, a name. No one was taking the lead with this so Thomas R. Gohring, a long time proprietor and resident in the area did. He chose the Blvd District because it seemed to fit. "Where do you want to eat?" "There's lots of good restaurants on the Blvd." "Ok, let's go!" Thomas R. Gohring does this free of change and his own spare time. It is a non-profit venture. He does this for the benefit of the local community. The actual airport is no where near the Blvd District. Also, someday, maybe the entire Aiport Blvd. will be renamed. By not including the word "airport" we get to skip a name change for: the Blvd District. Below is the beginning of "the list." The list of all businesses included in the Blvd District... starting neat Lamar Blvd. going on down to I-35. Any exclusions are purely because I haven't gotten to it yet.
