Armando Perales Sr., a Luling native, has dedicated his retirement to organizing with groups like LULAC, the Knights of Columbus, and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in Luling, where he’s served as a member since 2005 and as treasurer.

“I volunteer because it’s rewarding to help people overcome life’s challenges. Times are tough, but we do our best to fill the gaps,” said Perales. “We follow Jesus’ teachings: feed the hungry, clothe the naked, help the thirsty."

Perales emphasizes that the Hispanic community is diverse in culture, country, language, and heritage. “It’s all very beautiful.”

In 2017, Nataly Avendano connected with Mano Amiga when they helped free her father from ICE detention during her senior year of high school. “I saw the power of community fighting for justice.” Now, she serves as Mano Amiga’s Immigrant Equity Director, where she has worked for five years.

“The families that I work with are what motivates me to continue doing this work. I truly admire the strength families have even though they are being impacted so badly by ICE enforcement, they stay strong through the financial, emotional, and psychological hardship.

During National Hispanic Heritage Month, Avendao encourages people to take the time to reflect on the work that previous Hispanic leaders have started. “We must continue to preserve the small or big wins we have had so far. But most importantly, to always remember our own roots and where we came from.”

Everyone deserves conditions that support their health, safety, and well-being.

St. David’s Foundation is proud to support Lioness Justice Impacted Women's Alliance's work to advance culturally responsive mental health support in community-based spaces in Central Texas. This is one of the ways that Lioness works to improve the health, dignity, and well-being of people who are or have been incarcerated and to ensure their lived experiences help inform meaningful change. Advocacy is another.

Recently, a federal judge ruled that extreme heat conditions in Texas prisons without air conditioning violate constitutional protections. The decision brings greater attention to the toll extreme temperatures and unsafe conditions can have on people’s physical and mental health.

Through community-led organizations like Lioness, people with lived experience are helping bring greater awareness to these challenges and working toward conditions that support the dignity, health, and well-being of everyone.

High temperatures violate the Constitution’s protection against cruel and unusual punishment, the judge ruled. Texas will appeal.

: Today, St. David’s Foundation announced more than $47M in in grant funding to foster economic stability through coordinating public benefits enrollment and offering supportive services.

“Too often, the systems designed to support people during times of financial hardship are the very systems that can be hardest to navigate. These grants invest in trusted community organizations that are breaking down barriers, connecting people to critical resources, and helping ensure our safety net works with greater dignity, accessibility, and impact for all.” - Dr. Edward Burger, President & CEO, St. David’s Foundation

After starting as a student at Todos Juntos Learning Center, Luz Jasso now leads the Mi Familia and Me program at the Center, where she has worked for two years. Jasso’s children are her biggest motivation to do this work.

“What motivates me most, however, is seeing the changes families work so hard to make. At the end of each semester in our Mi Familia & Me program, parents share how they have established new routines, made reading part of family life, or begun breaking difficult generational patterns. These changes take tremendous courage and commitment and I’m very proud of them.”

Jasso’s favorite part about her work is seeing mothers build meaningful friendships and trusted support systems through Todos Juntos. She said witnessing their connection, growth and resilience inspires her to stay resilient in her own work.

“Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to celebrate our roots and traditions and to take pride in who we are. Our heritage shapes us, connects us to our roots, and inspires us to build a better future for our families. No matter where we are in the world, we find ways to move forward, grow, and succeed, contributing to our communities with the values and respect passed down to us.”
