You may have seen headlines about hospital closures โ€“ or experienced one in your own community โ€“ and wondered: why is this happening? ๐Ÿค”

When a hospital closes, the impact goes far beyond a facility shutting its doors. Communities lose timely access to care, economic stability, and critical health services. Across the country, rising costs, workforce shortages, and reimbursement challenges are placing significant strain on hospitals โ€“ especially in rural areas.

This video offers a brief look at whatโ€™s driving these closures and why it matters for patients, providers and the future of care.

On Wednesday, the Senate Health and Human Services Committee held a hearing to examine the drivers of rising healthcare and insurance costs in Texas. The hearing was structured across five panels, covering how the current landscape took shape, opportunities to reduce healthcare and drug costs and monitoring of legislative implementation.

THA's President and CEO, John Hawkins, provided testimony before the committee, directly addressing and correcting falsehoods perpetuated by insurance companies and other healthcare industry representatives during previous hearings.

Hawkins emphasized the critical role hospitals play in their communities and their ongoing commitment to keeping care accessible for all Texans. He also underscored the necessity of facility fees, which fund staff, supplies, and the drugs and medications needed to treat patients โ€“ without them, hospitals would be forced to scale back outpatient services or close their doors entirely. Additionally, he addressed false narratives regarding hospital consolidation, providing lawmakers with accurate context around why consolidation occurs, and that it keeps care close to home when other alternatives arenโ€™t viable.

THA remains dedicated to uplifting the vital work Texas hospitals are doing and working with legislators to address rising costs and identify solutions that strengthen access to care for all Texans.

Texas is in the midst of a mental health crisis. Data shows Texans experience mental health conditions at rates well above the national average, yet access to care falls far short of meeting that need. Expanding access to mental health care, including outpatient and step-down services, is critical for the continuum of care.

It is time to treat behavioral health with the same urgency and importance as physical health โ€“ and ensure coverage reflects that reality. Read more here: https://bit.ly/4dREcle

This is what hospital vision looks like in Texas: Wielding scissors and a desire to serve more patients amid tremendous growth, local leaders symbolically โ€œsnippedโ€ barriers to access to care for thousands of families across Seguin and Guadalupe County.

It took strong advocacy, persistence and healthy state partnerships to get here.

What began as an idea planted by Guadalupe Regional Medical Foundation CEO Elaine Bennett grew into a transformational investment in patients and the community. A new 27,000-square-foot facility in Seguin, set to formally open June 1, expands access to primary care, imaging and laboratory services for the community. At a packed community reception, healthcare trailblazers and local leaders formally commemorated the launch of the new Laurel Medical Office Building, part of Guadalupe Regional Medical Center.

This expansion took:

โ˜‘๏ธ Relentless advocacy

โ˜‘๏ธ Bipartisan collaboration

โ˜‘๏ธ Leaders willing to champion healthcare

GRMC, the only city-county-owned hospital in Texas, successfully advocated for $10 million in the state budget approved during the 88th Legislature.

The new facility was made possible by a slew of leaders and experts who were on hand for the ceremony, including Judith Zaffirini, Texas State Senator, former Rep. John Kuempel, hospital CEO Robert Haynes, local elected officials, community leaders and countless partners who believed in the vision.
