The League of Women Voters and the National Education Association announced a new partnership aimed at strengthening American democracy by recruiting a diverse new generation of poll workers for upcoming federal, state, and local elections!

"A healthy democracy relies on neighbors helping neighbors at the ballot box, yet poll worker shortages remain a silent threat that leads to long lines and silenced voters," said Jeanette Senecal, chief of civic learning and impact for the League of Women Voters.

in 1993, President Clinton signed the National Voter Registration Act, also known as the "Motor Voter Act," into law. It was a landmark step forward for voting access, requiring states to offer voter registration during driver's license renewals and expanding opportunities for eligible Americans to participate in democracy.

Thirty-three years later, that progress feels more fragile than ever.

Just this month, the Supreme Court dealt a devastating blow to Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act in Louisiana v. Callais, ruling that race cannot be the predominant factor in drawing districts, even when states are trying to comply with the VRA.

The Motor Voter Act was born from the understanding that access to the ballot must be actively protected, not assumed. Today, that work is more urgent than ever. The League of Women Voters will keep fighting for every eligible voter's right to participate.
