This delayed and subdued response by CDC, is troubling, especially compared with the their engaged efforts in trying to control the spread of Covid-19 on the cruise ship Diamond Princess in 2020 when it was quarantined off Japan for two weeks. It does not help that the USA has pulled out of WHO.

Restore humanitarian aid

Re: April 5 commentary, “80 years later, we need another Easter food drive”

Kudos to William Lambers for inspiring us to follow the Greatest Generation in feeding the hungry.

Eighty years ago President Harry S. Truman vigorously supported U.S. citizens' efforts to end hunger, but tragically, the current president has no interest in feeding the hungry in this country or any other.

In fact, the well-respected advocacy organization Oxfam has called out the Trump administration for leading a “pro-billionaire” agenda.

Oxfam estimates that almost half of the world’s population lives in poverty. The appalling contrast — extensive global poverty existing alongside massive increases in extreme wealth in the richest large country in the free world is shameful for Americans.

Yes, let’s donate to feed the hungry, but also demand that our congressional representatives defy Trump’s agenda of coddling the ultra-rich. They must take back the power of the purse, work to end hunger and restore our role as leader of global humanitarian assistance.
