Even under relentless missile and drone attacks in Kharkiv, health workers continue the vital but often unseen work of detecting and treating tuberculosis (TB) – helping protect millions from the world’s deadliest infectious disease.

Without treatment, a single person with TB can infect up to 15 others in a year. Every diagnosis and every person started on treatment prevents further transmission, helping to contain outbreaks before they spread.

With support from The Global Fund and partners, Ukraine has maintained its TB diagnostic capacity through a nationwide network of 224 laboratories equipped with modern diagnostic technologies – ensuring the people most affected by the war are diagnosed for TB and rapidly put on treatment.

Sunday's Austin American Statesman:

Ebola a real threat

Re: June 8 article, “Health workers in Congo labor with little pay, rest amid Ebola outbreak”

The medical professionals struggling to save lives and stop the spread of Ebola are ill-equipped because of the Trump administration’s wanton destruction of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and its mechanisms to check pandemics before they spread.

That the leader of the free world, obsessed over construction details for his gilded ballroom, is heedless of the Ebola emergency, is truly a source of shame for the American people.

The United States is a wealthy nation and foreign assistance takes less than 1% of our federal budget.

We must demand that our congressional representatives take back the power of the purse and restore our role as leader of global humanitarian assistance.

It is the right thing to do, and it is also in our best interest to fight Ebola in other countries, so we won’t have to fight it here.

TB anywhere is TB everywhere

For nearly three decades, tuberculosis followed a reassuring trajectory in the United States: case counts declining year after year, the disease receding from public consciousness, treated as a solved problem of the developing world rather than an active threat in American cities.

This delayed and subdued response by CDC, is troubling, especially compared with the their engaged efforts in trying to control the spread of Covid-19 on the cruise ship Diamond Princess in 2020 when it was quarantined off Japan for two weeks. It does not help that the USA has pulled out of WHO.

World Health Organization – which the US left under Trump – has been leading the response to the cruise ship outbreak

Thank you, European Commission, for your €700 million pledge to The Global Fund.

We are very grateful for your renewed commitment, announced at the One Health Summit in Lyon. It reaffirms Europe’s leadership in the fight against AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, and strengthens our shared efforts to drive innovation, market-shaping and regional manufacturing, expanding access to lifesaving tools for those who need them most.

The European Commission and EU Member States remain among the Global Fund’s key partners, contributing more than €3 billion to the Eighth Replenishment – around one third of total contributions since 2002.

Together, we can defeat the world’s deadliest infectious diseases and build a healthier, safer, and more equitable future for all.

Hear from RESULTS Expert on Poverty Lindsay K. Saunders on the importance of affordability in a new op-ed:

"As life becomes less and less affordable for working people, we need to restore and expand our social safety net so those of us who work for a living can keep our families affordably housed, fed, and healthy. Currently, we’re headed in the wrong direction."
