No special White-winged days. No special bag limits. Thanks to healthy dove populations, we’re all going by the same playbook.

If you see a live animal with maggots, please report it. Watch for:
- Enlarging wounds
- Foul, rotted flesh odor
- Signs of discomfort

MCSO Deputy Killed in Line of Duty on Interstate 45

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the loss of one of our own following a tragic incident that occurred early Sunday morning.

On June 28, 2026, at approximately 2:39 a.m., deputies responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 45 North near the Woodlands Parkway exit. Deputies arrived on scene and began assisting with this DWI crash investigation, including directing traffic to ensure the safety of those involved.

While deputies were actively working the scene, a heavy-duty commercial truck pulling a trailer struck Deputy Erika Serrato who was outside her vehicle directing traffic, along with two marked patrol vehicles that had emergency lights activated.
Deputy Serrato, 24 years old, who was assigned to District 2, was transported to a local hospital where she unfortunately succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased. She was serving the community with dedication and courage at the time of her death. She has been employed with MCSO for 6 years.

An additional MCSO Deputy was also injured during the incident after being struck by debris. He sustained minor injuries, was treated at a local hospital and was released.

One of the drivers involved in the initial crash, identified as Ashton Jammer, a 34-year-old male, has been charged with Driving While Intoxicated and will be transported to the Montgomery County Jail.

The driver of the commercial vehicle that struck Deputy Serrato was transported to a local hospital, and this crash remains under investigation.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office extends sincere gratitude to all assisting agencies that responded to this tragic incident, including the Texas Department of Public Safety, Harris County Sheriff’s Office, Houston Police Department, Oak Ridge North Police Department, Shenandoah Police Department, Montgomery County Precinct 3 Constable’s Office, Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office, The Woodlands Fire Department, South Montgomery County Fire Department, and Montgomery County Hospital District.

“Our hearts are broken today,” said Sheriff Doolittle. “Deputy Serrato made the ultimate sacrifice while serving and protecting our community. We ask that you keep her family, friends, and fellow deputies in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time. We grieve alongside them.”

Additional information, including funeral arrangements, will be released in the coming days.

The Fort Bend County Jail is being named in honor of former Sheriff Milton Wright. Wright spent 16 years as Sheriff in Fort Bend County.

Our prayers are with Sheriff Mendoza’s family, friends and the community he served.

It is with broken hearts and deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Sheriff Mendoza.

Today, Knox County lost more than a Sheriff. We lost a leader, a mentor, a protector, and a friend. We lost a man who dedicated his entire adult life to serving others before himself.

Sheriff Mendoza proudly served our nation for 4 years in the United States Army, answering the call to defend our country. When his military service ended, his commitment to serving others did not. He continued that calling in law enforcement, dedicating over two decades to protecting the people of Knox County and the surrounding communities.

His journey began as a Deputy Sheriff. Through hard work, dedication, and a heart for service, he became Chief of Police in Knox City, then Chief of Police in Munday, and ultimately the Sheriff of Knox County. Every badge he wore and every title he held was earned through sacrifice, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the people he served.

For those who worked beside him, Sheriff Mendoza was more than a boss. He was the steady voice during difficult times, the person who would answer the phone no matter the hour, and the man who always put his community and his deputies first. He believed in people, believed in service, and believed that taking care of others was one of life's greatest responsibilities.

The roads of Knox County will feel a little emptier. The Sheriff's Office will be a little quieter. The communities he loved will never be quite the same. His boots may no longer walk these halls, but his legacy will remain in every deputy he mentored, every life he touched, and every citizen he served.

While our hearts ache, we find comfort in knowing that his service here is complete. His watch has ended, but the impact he made will live on for generations.

Please join us in praying for the Mendoza family, his friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.

Sheriff, thank you for your service, your leadership, your friendship, and your sacrifice. We will carry on the mission, and we will never forget you.

Rest easy, Sheriff Mendoza. We'll take it from here.

Texas hospitality!

🇸🇪 WHEN SWEDEN MEETS SOUTH TEXAS 🤠

This afternoon on I-37, Deputy Chief Eric Kaiser responded to a minor accident involving five guys from Sweden — and found a Swedish flag flying proud off the back of their rental motorhome on the side of the highway.

It's World Cup time, and it turns out these five Swedes flew into Dallas, picked up an RV, and have been chasing their national team across North America — already caught a match in Monterrey, Mexico, with stops in Houston and Los Angeles still ahead. Talk about dedication to your nation's team!

Good news: everybody was okay. Texas DPS Troopers and our Deputy Chief made sure they were safe and squared away before they got back on the road.

They told us that back home, Texas and our Deputy Sheriff's are something they'd only seen in the movies...they didn't expect to find the genuine article out here in Atascosa County.

We showed them some real South Texas hospitality, and they even wanted a photo for the journal of their American road trip.

Safe travels, fellas! While we'll be cheering for Team USA, we'll give a wink and a nod to Sweden winning a few games along the way. 💙💛

Today, Texas DPS Trooper Sergio Romero was killed in the line of duty near Childress in a vehicle accident.

Trooper Romero leaves behind his wife, two young children, and a law enforcement family that is mourning an unimaginable loss.

We stand with his loved ones and our brothers and sisters at the Texas Department of Public Safety.
