Remembering Sister Helen Brewer, D.C., a devoted Daughter of Charity whose nearly two decades of service helped shape healthcare in Austin and Central Texas.

After arriving in Austin in 1997, Sister Helen advocated for children and families during the creation of CHIP, helping expand access to Medicaid and healthcare coverage for vulnerable children across Texas. She also served as a leader and longtime chair of the Seton Board, supporting patients and associates, engaging the community and advancing Ascension’s mission to serve all, especially those most vulnerable.

Her ministry carried forward the legacy of the Daughters of Charity, who established Seton Infirmary in Austin in 1902. Today, that legacy continues through Ascension Seton.

Food is more than nourishment—it can be an important part of supporting healthy moms, babies and families.

Ascension Seton’s Food is the Best Medicine (FBM) program has worked to address food insecurity among postpartum mothers in Central Texas by delivering nutritious food directly to families during the critical weeks after childbirth.

The newly released Food is the Best Medicine Comprehensive Program Report reflects growth and impact since we started in 2022:
🥕 502 households served
🥣 Nearly 60,000 meals provided
📦 3,565 successful home deliveries
🥬 More than 62,000 pounds of food distributed

Participants experienced significant improvements in food security, fruit and vegetable intake, overall health and depressive symptoms.

FBM brings together healthcare, philanthropy, research and community organizations to help postpartum families thrive. We are grateful to our program partners: Ascension Seton, Central Texas Food Bank, Farmshare Austin, and Michael & Susan Dell Center for Healthy Living.

One month ago, the new Ascension Seton Women's Hospital welcomed its first patients. More than 3,700 philanthropic gifts to the Women First campaign, inspired in part by the dedication of hundreds of volunteers, helped make this hospital possible.

"This hospital is so much more than a beautiful new building. It is a testament to what is possible when a community comes together with a shared vision. Every gift—large and small—helped bring us to this moment,” said Joel Rice, Executive Director of Ascension Seton Foundation.

Those generous investments—totaling over $19.5 million—have funded critical equipment throughout the hospital, including providing our gynecologic surgeons with cutting-edge technology. They have expanded NICU mental health services, increased access to community doulas, strengthened the Food is the Best Medicine program, and supported the Compassion Closet.

Thanks to the generosity of Ascension Seton Foundation’s Women First campaign supporters, the Ascension Seton Women’s Hospital opened with more than $19.5 million contributed by our donors to support equipment and programs.

The future of women’s healthcare in Central Texas is here! We are thrilled to announce that the new Ascension Seton Women’s Hospital will officially open its doors to serve our community on Monday. Thank you to our Women First donors and the community for making this huge achievement possible!

From the Emergency Department and advanced robotic surgery suites to our Level IV maternal care and Level III NICU staffed by Dell Children's neonatologists, this 326,000 sq. ft. facility is designed for women at every stage of life.
