What do city Texans and farmers have in common? FOOD!🐮🍅🌽🥩🍏🐔🥔

The country life isn’t everyone’s jam, but our local farmers give us a chance to slow down and remember what matters!

🤔HOW?

Texas leads the nation with 230,000+ farms and ranches, helping preserve land that will feed future generations.

🥹Is there anything better than coming home from a visit to your local farm with grassfed beef, green and blue chicken eggs, and fresh heirloom tomatoes off the vine?

💙We didn’t think so! Nature is always good for the soul!

⬇️Check out these helping uplift our communities through farming!

- connects Texas farmers to mentors to adopt regenerative grazing practices!

- A 13-acre certified organic farm providing food access and beginning farmer education to maintain direct connection with nature AND with fellow Texans.

- growing healthy communities through garden-based learning!

Have you noticed how many wise sayings are rooted in nature? (See what we did there?😉)

If future generations aren’t connected to nature, like trees, how will they understand these life lessons:

“Don’t miss the forest for the trees” – too focused on details to see the bigger picture

“Turn over a new leaf” – a fresh start

“Mighty oaks from little acorns grow” – great things start small

“As strong as an oak” – you can do hard things

“Bloom where you are planted” – don’t miss out on what’s in front of you

“Put down roots” – settling down making places home

“Out on a limb” – taking a risk

“The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree” – kids resemble parents

“A tree is known by its fruit” – people judge your actions

“Nip it in the bud” – stop before the problem grows

“Branch out” – to try new things

YOU can help instill words of wisdom and celebrate Earth month with us by helping plant with a donation at the H-E-B register in store or online through May 8!

Would you like to see a tree planting in your school or community?🤠

😭100 MILES of pristine water flowing in one of Texas’ wildest rivers!

📍You guessed it—Devil’s River!

A year ago, had the opportunity to experience the iconic waters firsthand:

The Devils is a vivid reminder of what Texas looks like at its absolute wildest. An overnight paddling trip is the best way to immerse yourself in the landscape and become acquainted with what makes this river so special.

The visual contrast of this region is striking. The river sits at a rugged ecological crossroads where the Chihuahuan Desert collides with the rocky Edwards Plateau. It’s an arid, jagged environment that seems like the absolute last place you’d expect to find a pristine waterway. Yet, born straight out of the rock, the Devils surges from the underground Edwards-Trinity aquifer at its spring fed headwaters. In an otherwise harsh landscape, those springs create a vital lifeline that cuts right through sheer limestone canyons.

As you paddle along, you’ll encounter geological wonders like Dolan Falls alongside the diverse wildlife that calls this place home. In the clear pools, you can easily spot some of my personal favorites including Spotted Gar, Rio Grande Cichlids, and Largemouth Bass. Out here, the absolute isolation forces you to be entirely present and truly soak up the beauty around you.

By the time you reach the paddler’s takeout, you’re physically drained but incredibly inspired. This waterway demands respect, and after an adventure on the Devils you’ll understand exactly why it’s worth protecting.

Star Wars… but make it Texas!🤠🪐

Here are four Texas locations that George Lucas should have known about when filming his intergalactic saga:

🛶Caddo Lake - From kayaking to fishing, visitors can enjoy this naturally formed lake on the Texas-Louisiana border and its otherworldly scenery. The murky bayou with trees draped in Spanish moss is reminiscent of the world Dagobah featured in Return of the Jedi!

🌅The Monahans Sandhills - Endless sunsets (only one sun though 😕), remote desert terrain, and clear, starry nightskies make this West Texas destination alike to one of the many isolated planets of the Outer Rim!

💧Gorman Falls - Found in Colorado Bend State Park, this 70-foot waterfall looks like something you would stumble across on Naboo! Hiking to the viewing area includes a rocky descent so make sure to take proper footwear!

🏜️The Davis Mountains - A hike in the Davis Mountains will put you right back in the Outer Rim. The rocky, arid landscape could be the backdrop for a pod-race or a Jedi excursion!

Star Wars fan or not, these are great locations to go experience the natural diversity that Texas has to offer!

May the 4th be with you!

WE KNOW you have experienced “semantic satiation” before👀

It’s when you repeat or write a word so many times– it begins to lose its meaning and even the spelling looks… FAKE?

What if we told you this happens in conservation ALL THE TIME?! Some words and concepts are repeated so often that, to many people, they lose their meaning.

Let’s start with: RESILIENCE–– what does RESILIENCE even mean?

Resilience is what happens after something goes wrong….

⛈️A hurricane hits the coast
❌Not resilient: the storm surge wipes out roads, homes, and habitat
✅Resilient: marshes, dunes, and reefs break the waves– less damage reaches people and infrastructure

🌽A drought hits the farmland
❌Not resilient: crops fail after a few dry weeks
✅Resilient: soil holds moisture longer, crops survive, recovery is faster when rain comes

🌧️Heavy rain falls over a city
❌Not resilient: Streets flood in 20 minutes, water rushes into homes and businesses
✅Resilient: Water is absorbed by parks, urban wetlands, and permeable streets—flooding is slower, lower, or avoided entirely

🔥A wildfire moves through plains or forest
❌Not resilient: fire burns hotter, spreads faster, destroys countless acres
✅Resilient: land has been managed with controlled burns, native plants, and spacing of trees so fire intensity is lower and ecosystems recover faster

When we say we want to build a “resilient” future it means: *building prepared systems that bend without breaking when something goes wrong*

What other conservation term has fallen victim to semantic satiation?🤔

🌳Trees are the OG social media! WAIT– we can explain!

Before 55.66 billion accounts were created on social media platforms, people gathered in person to create real life memories!

Trees were their meeting place to:

🧺Gather for a picnic,
🎶Enjoy music in the park,
📖Read a book on a hot summer’s day,
😌Slow down and find quiet in a noisy world,
🪡Complete household tasks in the shade,
🤝Or stop to chat with a neighbor!

When Randy Travis sang “as long as old men can sit and talk about the weather” -we’re positive he envisioned them sitting under an old oak tree!

🤝We partnered with for a statewide tree planting program 🌳 to enrich the places we call home and create cooler, healthier, environments for schools, communities, and our future💙

So far… has planted over 250,000 native trees across Texas– reforesting over 600 acres of land and impacting over 14,000 students🤠

💙YOU can ensure Texans always have trees to gather beneath by donating to at registers in store or online through May 8!

Curious if any have been planted in your community yet?

🧠🌱What if restoration–in health and land–wasn’t a luxury, but a way of life?

Nature is being prescribed by thousands of healthcare providers!

And time in nature has long been one of humanity's greatest sources of creative inspiration!

Around the world, art is also being prescribed for health benefits!

IMAGINE if the two were combined to nurture our wellbeing, restore our relationship with the land, and bring our communities closer together–THEY ARE!

🌸The PETAL Project (Participatory Environmentalism Through Art & Learning) is a community-centered environmental program that blends art, education, and environmental conservation.

🎨🌻Programs are focused on broad, accessible topics, including native plant walks, nature film screenings, and skill-building workshops such as seed paper making, cyanotypes, and mending.

Activities take place in public and partner spaces throughout the community, including studios, live music venues, universities, and other local spaces.

💙Food grown at their community garden plot is donated to local shelters and food pantries, extending the project’s benefits to underserved community members.
