🏛️ Speak Up for Historic Preservation

Historic places tell the stories of our communities and protecting them requires all of us!

Join The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation and preservation advocates from across the state for *Speak Up for Section 106,” a free virtual event on Thursday, October 29, from 12–1 p.m.

Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act plays an important role in ensuring that the effects of federally funded, permitted, or approved projects on historic properties are considered. With significant changes to the Section 106 process being proposed, this virtual program will explain what’s at stake, how these protections have helped safeguard Georgia’s historic resources, and how preservation advocates can make their voices heard.

Historic places tell our stories. Community voices help protect them.

Section 106 requires federal agencies to consider how projects they fund, approve, or carry out could affect historic properties and provides opportunities for public input.

Proposed changes could weaken this process and limit community participation. The National Trust for Historic Preservation is urging senators to protect meaningful consultation as they consider permitting legislation.

6:00 p.m. Smithsonian Affiliates Lecture: Daniel Piazza, Chief Curator of Philately of the Smithsonian National Postal Museum. Join us for an engaging journey through the early history of the postal service in the American South. Drawing on the National Postal Museum’s collections and the speaker’s forthcoming book, this talk will reveal how the mail helped weave the southern states into the fabric of the early republic. Internship Grant Awarded to Historic Augusta!

We are excited to announce that Historic Augusta, Inc. has received the Handumy Jean Tahan Museum Fund Internship Grant through the Southeastern Museums Conference-SEMC!

With support from this grant, Peyton Millwood, a recent Mercer University graduate and history major, will research the roles and experiences of African Americans in Augusta during the 1860s. His work will help expand our understanding and interpretation of this important period in Augusta’s history.

A special thank you to the Southeastern Museums Conference-SEMC and the Handumy Jean Tahan Museum Fund for supporting this opportunity and the continued research and interpretation of our community’s history.
