Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art Nonprofit contemporary gallery // Art studio classes for adults + children hosted quarterly

Housed in historic Ware's Folly (c. 1818) and the Walker-Mackenzie Studio (c. 1909), the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art is proud to offer visual art education opportunities for students of all ages and interests. Quarterly studio classes and workshops are available in a wide range of media, from drawing and painting to photography, weaving, clay, and sculpture, for children, youth, and adults.

As Augusta's only nonprofit contemporary art gallery, each year over 30 exhibitions spotlight regional, national, and international artists in a variety of styles, techniques and media, including ceramics, photography, painting, drawing and printmaking.

Meet the juror: Michael Dickins

Michael Dickins is an interdisciplinary artist and the director and chief curator of the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art at the College of Charleston School of the Arts. Known for bold, thought-provoking work, Dickins has exhibited across the Southeastern U.S. and in Philadelphia, Denver, Seattle, Houston, Istanbul, and Berlin, with two appearances at {Re}Happening at Black Mountain College.

Over the past 15 years, he has developed innovative gallery programs, producing over 50 exhibitions and public art projects that bridge disciplines and spark meaningful conversations. His curatorial vision has been spotlighted at Atlanta Contemporary, the Emporium in Knoxville, the Jepson Center, and the Mid-South Sculpture Alliance, and his expertise has been sought by ARTSMemphis, SouthArts, ArtFields, apexart, AIRIE, and numerous collegiate exhibitions.

A graduate of Georgia Southern University (BFA) and Goddard College (MFA), Dickins is committed to art that challenges, engages, and connects communities—turning galleries into spaces of dialogue and discovery.

Next week is our last Summer Club session for ages 11-16, and there are still spots open! Time to beat that midsummer slump with some art-making. You can create your very own pottery this summer in our Pottery on the Wheel classes! Our instructors teach you how to make useful forms out of clay on the wheel, and also how to use glazes to make them uniquely yours. Each evening class series has 8 weekly sessions, sign up online at GHIA.org.
