🔬 Connecting Georgia educators to the life sciences...

One pipette at a time!

Dr. Renee Martin represented Georgia Life Sciences at the STEM/STEAM Forum in Athens, helping educators explore the careers, skills and hands-on experiences shaping Georgia’s life sciences industry.

In partnership with Hunt Optics & Imaging and the University of Georgia’s Ellestad Lab, Renee connected teachers with career opportunities and led a hands-on “Pipetting 101” workshop, giving educators an experience they can take back to their classrooms.

Through the Georgia Life Sciences Equipment Depot, she also distributed industry-donated equipment and supplies to K–12 educators. This helps put more tools for STEM learning directly into the hands of teachers across Georgia.

Georgia Life Sciences has submitted written comments to the Georgia House Study Committee on Pharmacy Benefits Managers and Consumers’ Access to Prescription Medications, weighing in on two important areas of prescription drug policy: pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) and the federal 340B Drug Pricing Program.

Our comments emphasize the need for greater transparency and accountability across the prescription drug system, with a focus on a critical question: Are savings ultimately translating into measurable benefits for patients?

As the Study Committee continues its work and develops recommendations for the Georgia General Assembly, GLS will continue advocating for policies that support patient access, transparency, and a strong life sciences ecosystem.

How do we help students see themselves in STEM careers they may not even know exist?

At our upcoming Georgia Life Sciences educator workshop in Savannah (October 16-17), Britanie Blackhurst, Ph.D., of Hunt Optics & Imaging will lead an interactive session exploring the connection between curiosity, classroom science and real-world career pathways.

Drawing from her own unconventional journey from a struggling high school student to Ph.D. scientist and microscopy specialist, Britanie will take educators beyond the textbook with:

🔬 Hands-on microscopy & imaging
🧪 Research skills and tool selection
🧭 STEM career pathways students may not know about
đź’ˇ Strategies for expanding access to research, mentorship and career exposure

Educators will also explore the evolution of microscopy, from early discoveries to modern fluorescence imaging, and ways to bring those concepts back to their classrooms.

Recently, Georgia Life Sciences joined more than 80 organizations from across industry, academia, public health and the biosecurity community in calling on congressional leaders to fully reauthorize the Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness Act (PAHPA). The legislation supports critical U.S. health security and preparedness programs, including public-private partnerships that advance medical countermeasures and strengthen the nation’s ability to respond to emerging threats.

From prior authorization and biomarker testing to mental health parity, PBM practices, and the 340B program, policies have been enacted to improve access and reduce barriers to treatment. But implementation, compliance, transparency, and enforcement can determine whether those reforms make a meaningful difference for patients.
