❣️Help us deliver free technical assistance to put climate and environmental data in the hands of changemakers.

Over the last two years, we delivered approximately 5000 hours of pro bono technical assistance to communities throughout the Deep South. With cuts to funding, this important work is hard to sustain.

Before the cuts to federal environmental programs, on average, communities overburdened by air pollution saw less federal-level air monitoring.

We’re expanding a network of our customized, solar-powered independent air monitors that we began in St. John the Baptist Parish, LA, so that trained community members have additional oversight and accountability tools that protect their environment and their health.

In Anniston, AL, improving community access to environmental information is integral to long-term resiliency.

Last summer, we visited the West Anniston Foundation, a public charity corporation nestled in the southernmost tip of the Appalachian Mountains. In collaboration with WAF, E2I2 is building a community reference library that synthesizes scientific data and archival history with personal knowledge and first-hand experience with industrial pollution.

The removal of public environmental data keeps communities in the dark about what’s in the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the soil our food grows from.

This decision makes it harder for people to advocate for their environment and those most vulnerable to health complications from local pollution challenges.

The Environmental Equity Information Institute is building an information ecosystem across the South that is community-owned and fully accessible, so that environmental data can be used by everyone building a healthier, equitable environmental future.

Until recently, Fifth Ward Elementary School in St. John the Baptist Parish, Louisiana, sat just a few hundred feet away from Denka Performance Elastomer Plant—the only chemical plant in the U.S. that made chloroprene for neoprene, a synthetic rubber used widely in manufactured goods. This year, the predominantly Black and Latino elementary school closed following litigation filed by the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.

Chloroprene is a colorless gas, a carcinogen linked to severe health complications. According to the EPA, short-term exposure can cause irritation to the eyes and temporary hair loss. Long-term exposure to chloroprene is linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, poor fetal development, and cancer. In St. John, where residents were exposed to chloroprene for nearly 41 years, the risk for developing cancer is 50 times the national average.

In May 2025, after decades of environmental justice advocacy, pressure from environmental regulators, and EPA lawsuits, the Denka Plant suspended production. However, it remains unclear whether the industrial plant site will be shuttered for good, leaving residents and community organizers with both relief and uncertainty about the future.
