“The stories we’re hearing make clear why the need is so much greater than any of us could see in the first days after the tornado,” said Nikki Gerhard, executive director of LEAVEN Fox Cities.

There is a need of $4 million dollars to help those still on the waitlist for direct financial support.

Fund leaders approved an additional $1.3 million for direct financial assistance, bringing the total dedicated to household assistance to $4.1 million.

Curt Detjen, our President and CEO, joined Dave Edwards this morning at WHBY Woodward Community Media for their Rally for the Valley Radiothon.

Woodward is raising funds for those in need with the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region, Oshkosh Area Community Foundation, and United Way Fox Cities to help the communities impacted in the July 27th tornado.

But what is the Traveling Closet?

It’s our way of bringing free clothing and essential items directly into communities where getting to our Menasha location may be difficult. We bring the racks, the clothing, and the shopping experience right to the community so people can come in, browse, and choose what they need, completely free.

Waupaca is an important part of this program, and these numbers show just how much this community needs and uses this resource.

Months after the July tornado, people across the area continue to show their support for those affected by the storm.

Megan Schuessler, Vice President of Donor Services & Gift Planning with the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region, joined Local 5 Live to provide an update on how the fund is progressing and where it currently stands. She explains who their partners are in raising this money, including United Way Fox Cities and the Oshkosh Area Community Foundation, and how those who are still in need of help can make a request.

With many people mistakenly thinking they need a lot of money to make an impact, Megan explains what she means when she says, “you don’t need a fortune, you need a foundation,” and what to keep in mind when it comes to taxes and giving as the end of the year approaches.

"...We've been working so hard with our nonprofit partners to get them set up. Disaster relief is different than typical nonprofit services. So, we had to work with them to create a whole separate program that's based on not needs, not income, not historical nonprofit qualifications, truly based on this disaster and this disaster alone. So, we've gotten them in a good place where they now can start to meet with individuals and get the dollars out in a way that sets them, the households up for success... There was a lot of things that we had to take into account to get these dollars out the door."
