Over the past three years, ACT's Program and Operations Associate Vannice Evans brought incredible energy, initiative, and flexibility to her work, taking on whatever was needed to help our team and nonprofit partners succeed. She helped guide our transition to a new platform for Spring2ACTion - becoming a trusted go-to tech support for nonprofits, created the Connected Alexandria platform, coordinated the behind-the-scenes details for the Alexandria Council of Human Service Organizations, and helped strengthen ACT’s operations through her work on our Employee Handbook, AI Policy, and Emergency Preparedness Plan.

Vannice was always ready to jump in, learn, problem solve, and keep things moving. We are so grateful for her care and commitment to ACT and the Alexandria community!

A Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) lets you donate directly from your IRA to ACT for Alexandria, reducing your taxable income while supporting the causes you care about most. In partnership with Voices for Virginia's Children and the Northern Virginia Health Foundation, ACT hosted advocacy capacity-building workshops designed to help nonprofits strengthen their approach to year-round state advocacy. Participants explored what advocacy looks like across each season of Virginia’s policy calendar and walked away with concrete, actionable next steps to strengthen their advocacy efforts.

We’re excited to continue building advocacy capacity with an in-person session on December 3 and a virtual session on December 4. These workshops will focus on practical strategies for engaging in the 2026 General Assembly session and turning advocacy knowledge into meaningful action.

As Just Neighbors celebrates its 30th anniversary, Board Member Rev. Ken Hawes made a legacy gift to the organization's new Endowment - the first Endowment gift of their 30th Anniversary Neighbor-to-Neighbor campaign to expand operations and long-term giving. His gift is intended to launch the campaign and inspire other board members and supporters to follow. Just Neighbors

Marian Van Landingham, an artist and arts patron, elected representative, and longtime champion of Alexandria's children and families, left a generous legacy gift to Campagna Center when she passed away in April 2026. Marian was passionate about ensuring every Alexandrian had access to opportunities to thrive.

Her legacy gift supports The Campagna Center's programming for under-resourced children, families, and adults, including early childhood education, literacy support, and English language learning, helping ensure residents facing barriers can access the resources they need to fully participate in community life.

ACT Value #5: Justice
Economic well-being isn't evenly distributed in Alexandria, and pretending otherwise doesn't help anyone. Justice means we name what's systemic: the disparities rooted in racism and bias that shape who has access to opportunity here.

September is Alexandria's first-ever Legacy Month, a citywide celebration of planned giving and a signature moment for Think Ahead Alexandria. To celebrate, ACT hosted a Coffee & Conversation session featuring Gretchyn Meinken, Partner, Friedman Grimes Meinken & Leischner PLLC and Mary Lee Anderson, Executive Director of Senior Services of Alexandria, to share what legacy giving looks like from both the donor and nonprofit perspectives.

We had an overwhelming response to the program and we are excited to see the conversation growing, with 72% of participating nonprofits now reporting a strong understanding and positive perspective on legacy giving. Together, we’re helping Alexandrians see themselves as legacy builders and think ahead about the future of our community.
