ACT believes that strong nonprofits are the foundation of a thriving community. That’s why capacity building has remained a core part of our work for the past 20 years. ACT’s 2025 Capacity Building Grant program focused on strengthening organizational resilience, recognizing that sustainable impact begins with healthy, supported teams.

One of our grantees, OAR of Arlington, Alexandria, and Falls Church has embraced this approach through a deep commitment to staff well-being. Executive Director, Elizabeth Jones Valderrama, believes that prioritizing well-being should not be viewed as optional, but an expectation woven into an organization’s culture.

By investing in the well-being of those who serve others, organizations like OAR are building the resilience needed to strengthen their teams, deepen their impact, and better serve our community for years to come.

We also practice this with our team! ACT has a sabbatical policy for all of our employees, and recently our President & CEO, Heather Peeler, used her time away to travel, visit with family, and be creative.

At ACT, one of our core beliefs is that supporting our community means investing in the organizations that care for our community.

In 2025, ACT awarded eight $10,000 Capacity Building Grants to strengthen organizational resilience by supporting the people and systems behind the work. By investing in staff well-being, leadership development, and operational sustainability, these grants support the long-term resilience needed to create lasting community impact.

This quote from Lynn Thomas, Executive Director of Community Lodgings highlights how investment in organizational resilience is essential to sustaining meaningful change.

❓ What is economic-well being?
❓ How does ACT use advocacy as a tool to advance economic well-being in Alexandria and across Virginia?
❓ How does local government track progress toward achieving economic well-being?

Last week, ACT hosted a virtual stakeholder briefing that answered these questions, explored the case for economic well-being and the powerful role that advocacy plays in achieving it.

At ACT, capacity building means investing in organizational resilience, well-being, and trust-based philanthropic practices that help nonprofits thrive long-term. Since 2005, ACT has invested more than $2M in capacity-building grants to Alexandria nonprofits.

As part of our commitment to equity, ACT takes a trust-based approach to grantmaking that helps break down traditional power dynamics between funders and grantees, creating a collaborative environment that supports listening, learning, and true partnership.
