In 1935, Italy began its second attempt to invade and occupy Ethiopia. The Gebru family and other families of Ethiopian nobility were put under arrest and taken to the Italian island of Asinara in 1937. The following are a small selection of photos taken by Emahoy during their three year internment. The captions are her own, and the numbers (eg, “Asinara 2-3a”) are from Emahoy’s cataloging system. The quality of the photos is not always the best, but we are working on creating higher-resolution scans, and we hope you can still enjoy their historical significance. In the interest of making our profile easier to find for fans of Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru, we are switching our profile picture from our Foundation logo to one of Emahoy. However, we do not want it forgotten that Emahoy’s legacy is the Emahoy Tsege Mariam Music Foundation, which funds music education programs to underserved children in Ethiopia and the U.S. While she was living, Emahoy donated all the money she made from publications of her albums to charitable causes, and her Foundation continues that work. Thank you!

This is the original packaging for Emahoy’s 1972 album Church of Kidane Mehret, which was reissued by Mississippi Records in 2025. Swipe to read Emahoy’s liner notes. Below is her bio for the album:

“Emahoy Tsege-Mariam Gebru was born in Addis Ababa, the Capital City of Ethiopia, on the 12th of December 1923, as a daughter of the late Kentiba Gebru Desta of Gondar and his wife, Woizero Kassaye Yelemtu, who lives in Addis Ababa. In 1963 a record of her earliest compositions was released in Germany, and in 1970 a third one was dedicated to an Ethiopian welfare organization. Here, all the piano and organ music played are her own compositions performed by herself as a contribution to the welfare of the Church.”

This is the original packaging for Emahoy’s 1972 album, The Hymn of Jerusalem, which she completed around the same time as Church of Kidane Mehret. Both were recorded in Germany. Songs from this album were later re-released on Ethiopiques 21 (2006) and Jerusalem (2023). Swipe to read Emahoy’s liner notes. Below is the album’s description:

“Emahoy Tsege-Mariam Gebru was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on December 12, 1923 of the late Kentiba Gebru Desta from Gondar and his wife Woizero Kassaye Yelemtu, who lives in Addis Ababa. Her first record was released in Germany in 1963. This record now of a 1,000 copies is offered as a welfare contribution to the Orphanage of the Armed Forces Wives Association, and its release was made possible by Woizero Desta Gebru, her sister.”

Emahoy’s preface for the sheet music collection published by the Emahoy Tsege Mariam Music Foundation in 2018. The book featured all 16 tracks from Ethiopiques 21, transcribed and edited by Mary Sutton. While the physical collection remains out of print, the music sheets it contained are available for digital download at emahoymusicpublisher.com.
