Keepsake, the lone survivor of a litter of 10 kittens born outside and ravaged by flystrike, maggots, and elements no baby should ever be exposed to, is fighting to stay here with us. For four weeks, Keke has received round the clock care from her incredible foster mom. Without her neonatal expertise, we know she wouldn’t still be here.

Keepsake saw Dr. Werden at Harmony Hill yesterday as we continue trying to understand everything happening with her. Despite antibiotics and pain medication for pneumonia and septic arthritis affecting all four limbs, she continues to struggle with abnormal breathing and regulating her body temperature. We now believe she may have chondrodysplasia, causing her leg bones to develop abnormally, along with neurological concerns including possible hydrocephalus. Keke has been referred to VRA, where she’ll see Dr. Kaiman in neurology and consult with Dr. Ganjei in specialty surgery next week.

Keepsake’s story is also why preventing more kittens from being born matters so deeply. Kittens like Keke are born outside every day, and many suffer or die within their first weeks. We are fortunate to have expert fosters, specialized equipment, veterinary care, and a community that gives us the resources to fight for her. Most never have that chance.

We cannot rescue or adopt our way out of overpopulation. Spay, neuter and TNR are essential, and that includes spaying pregnant cats. Tails High will always prioritize an expedited spay rather than allowing a pregnant cat to give birth in rescue. Pregnancy and delivery carry risks for the mother, while being born in a foster home cannot prevent congenital abnormalities, medical complications, suffering or death.

There are already more kittens waiting for help than rescues have space to save. Preventing another litter is humane. It protects the mother, prevents suffering and supports the tireless work of TNR volunteers working to end this cycle at its source.

We will keep fighting for Keepsake and for a future where fewer kittens ever have to fight this hard just to survive. 🤎🗝️

Dione (aka Dee Dee) has always been quite the little climber! From a young age, she was pulling herself up onto things and climbing to the top of every obstacle, proving to be the challenge when it came to keeping them contained in a pen when younger. Now she rules the kingdom after scaling all the way to the top of the Kitty Kasa castles 😺

She might look familiar… because you’ve already met her mini me. 🖤🍭

Annabel is Lollipop’s mama, and if you’ve been following Lollipop’s journey, you know just how much personality that tiny girl has packed into her little body. We’re happy to share that Lollipop continues to do so well with medication management for neurological FIP and seizure control since seeing the neurologist a couple of weeks ago.

And now it’s time to properly introduce the lovely lady who raised her. Annabel gave Lollipop and her siblings everything they needed to grow up strong, loved, and apparently VERY opinionated. But at only about a year old herself, Annabel is barely more than a kitten. She’s finished raising babies, and now she’s ready to be the baby for once.

Named for Edgar Allan Poe’s beautiful and mysterious Annabel Lee, our Annabel is a petite, sleek black beauty with mesmerizing eyes and a personality that makes her pretty close to perfect. She’s wonderfully chatty, affectionate, playful, curious, and always happy to provide a little running commentary on whatever you happen to be doing. After spending so much of her young life being a devoted mama, she’s ready for toys, attention, adventures, affection, and a family who will appropriately admire her at all times.

And you don’t have to take our word for it. Annabel is currently hanging out with our friends at Pet Supplies Plus in Franconia, VA, where she’s hopeful the person who walks in to say hello might just be the person she’s been waiting for. Go visit her. Spend a little time with her. Let her tell you all about herself.

One of the hardest realities in rescue is knowing we cannot help every cat that needs us. The sheer number of requests coming from every direction, every single day, is enough to break you. Every rescuer knows the pain of recognizing your limitations and having to say, “I’m sorry. We can’t.”

But sometimes, we simply can’t look away, knowing that if we don’t do something, there may be no other option.

If you’ve been here for a while, you may remember a mission to save dozens of cats from a horrific situation in West Virginia beginning in December 2023. Over the years, Tails High and several other rescues have worked tirelessly to remove and rehabilitate as many cats as possible, despite an uncooperative owner and circumstances that often left us feeling like there was no end in sight.

Last week, we shared that sweet Afterglow came from this same place. Tragically, just as her new beginning had started, we lost her suddenly while trying to ensure she received the veterinary care she needed. Alongside Afterglow, we welcomed Epilogue and Vesper into loving foster homes and hoped we could finally close this chapter. But more cats were still there, and they needed us too.

This weekend, as space allowed, we took in five more. Evermore, Serendipity, Equinox, Quinn and Gibson are now safe with fosters who are giving them everything they deserve.

Unfortunately, Evermore showed her foster mom yesterday that she wasn’t feeling well and ended up in the ER. She is stable now, but needs urgent dental surgery Monday to remove an abscessed tooth causing her significant pain. Serendipity will also need dental surgery so she can finally feel her best.

We’re incredibly grateful to be partnering with Hardy County Humane Society to bring this situation to a close and ensure there is no more suffering. There are still more cats we hope to help in the coming weeks, but we cannot do it without your support.
