It’s a dreary, rainy Sunday, but we’re finding plenty of bright spots in the lives of three very special kitties who have needed us most this week. And we’re feeling hopeful about what’s ahead!

Meridian is soaking up all the love and reminding us that everything is going to be alright. After getting the all-clear from his cardiologist, our sweet boy is scheduled for dental surgery tomorrow to finally remove his painful, broken teeth. We can’t wait for Meridian to feel his very best and take the next big step toward finding his forever family.

Bart has been an excellent patient since his emergency blood transfusion on Thursday! He’s taking his medications, eating well, and even playing, which has been wonderful to see after such a frightening crisis. Unfortunately, his gums are looking quite pale again, and we suspect he’ll need another transfusion tomorrow morning. Louie is ready to be our hero and donate blood, even if he doesn’t know it yet! We’re hopeful this second transfusion will give Bart the boost he needs to get through this crisis.

Little Briar Rose has made remarkable progress, bit by bit, during her stay in critical care. Our Sleeping Beauty was discharged earlier today, stable and finally heading home! Unfortunately, Rose remains blind, and we have more questions than answers about what caused her neurological symptoms. We’ll be following up with Harmony Hill for additional insight, including whether neurological FIP is truly responsible.

For now, Rose couldn’t wait to get out of her carrier and curl up in the lap of her rescuer, Valeria. She was understandably restless in her hospital kennel and managed to do quite a number on her little nose. We’re relieved she’ll now have more room to navigate safely as she adjusts to a world without sight. Fortunately, cats can adapt remarkably well to blindness, and Rose has already shown us what a tough little girl she is.

Every Sleeping Beauty deserves the chance to wake up, and we’re doing everything we can to make sure Little Briar Rose gets hers.

This precious calico girl was being cared for by a longtime Tails High volunteer who works independently to improve the lives of countless cats and kittens throughout Prince George’s County and beyond. Rose had been humanely trapped for a routine spay surgery on Thursday, but what should have been a simple procedure turned into a frightening medical emergency when she struggled to wake from anesthesia.

Despite medications to reverse the anesthesia, Rose remained profoundly lethargic, unable to stand, and eventually barely responsive. She was rushed to the emergency hospital, where she’s remained under intensive care with concerning neurological symptoms, including blindness and difficulty moving.

Her doctors are considering neurological FIP, or a toxic reaction to anesthesia medications that we’re hopeful may continue to resolve with supportive care and IV fluids.

Thankfully, our little Sleeping Beauty is beginning to wake up! Rose can now hold her eyes open, seems increasingly aware of the people working so hard to help her, and best of all, she’s eating! These are incredibly encouraging developments, even though she still has a long way to go.

While we’ve been juggling other critical emergencies, we knew our friend needed us, and we couldn’t leave Little Briar Rose without an advocate. Now we’re hoping our wonderful community will come to our rescue as her hospitalization expenses continue to grow. Our initial estimate was $1,818, but Rose needs at least another 24 hours of hospital care, and we’re committed to giving her every opportunity to recover.

Why would a perfect cat be adopted and returned four times? It seems the saying “everything happens for a reason” rings true for our precious Bart. We believe the reason was so Bart would be with us when he needed help the most.

Yesterday was one of those catastrophic days that reminded us how well we operate in a crisis and how fortunate we are to have friends who always have our back. Bart’s foster mom, the ever amazing Kate, had noticed a change in Bart and we had a vet appointment scheduled for next week. But when she looked at his gums, she knew this was an emergency. At the ER, we learned Bart’s PCV (percentage of blood made up of red blood cells) was 5.7%! Normal feline PCV is 30%+, meaning Bart was critically anemic and urgently needed lifesaving care.

Unfortunately, many urgent cares don’t have feline blood available for transfusions. We faced the terrifying reality that Bart couldn’t get a transfusion because none of the area ERs we frantically called had blood available. Then our heroes came to the rescue again. Dr. Werden and her team at Harmony Hill said “bring us two large healthy cats and we can help”. Acacia sped home for Theodore and Louie, then headed to Sterling with Bart in hopes of saving his life.

Our no good terrible day got better when both reluctant, terrified brothers were a match for Bart’s blood type! Since Theo and Louie are chunky guys, we strategically used Theodore as yesterday’s donor, knowing Louie may need to come to the rescue Monday if Bart needs another transfusion. These Tails High graduates were happy to pay it forward to a friend in need.

We’re so relieved that Bart handled the transfusion beautifully and is recovering like a champ. While we await more diagnostics, Dr. Werden suspects Bart has Pure Red Cell Aplasia (PRCA). He’s started treatment and will return Monday to recheck his PCV and possibly receive another transfusion.

Bart doesn’t have his forever family yet, but his Tails High family is fighting like hell for him. Can you help us fight for Bart with a donation and a share to cover these unexpected expenses? We are so grateful for your support. 🖤

Meridian has a precious heart, and now we know a little more about what makes it tick.

Last week, our sweet boy visited the cardiologist after an abnormal heart screening caused us to postpone his much-needed dental surgery. Thankfully, he’s been cleared to have his procedure this coming Monday, and we’re so relieved he’ll soon have those painful teeth taken care of!

His echocardiogram revealed a mild form of hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, which means part of his heart muscle is slightly thickened, causing a small amount of resistance to blood flowing out of his heart. Fortunately, his heart is functioning normally, he doesn’t need medication at this time, and his cardiologist feels comfortable with him undergoing anesthesia. While a heart condition is never something we want for a young kitty, we’re grateful his findings are mild.

Meanwhile, Meridian has been making himself right at home with his foster mom, Kate. His favorite pastime is sleeping directly on her face, because apparently there’s no such thing as being too close! As he’s come out of his shell, we’ve gotten to know the soft-spoken, incredibly affectionate gentle giant underneath all that initial shyness.

He gets along wonderfully with his foster brothers and would likely enjoy a kitty sibling or two, although he’s independent enough to happily soak up all the attention himself.

Once Meridian has recovered from his dental surgery, he’ll be ready to find his forever family. We just know someone out there is going to fall head over heels for this special boy, just as we have.

Caturday cozy canoodling with brothers from another mother Bobby and Bart. This adorable duo has had their fair share of trouble finding the perfect forever home and we think, to be frank, that sucks! These perfect boys deserve THE WORLD! Can you help us find their people?

While they certainly don’t need to be adopted as a pair, they get along so well. From one sensitive dude to another, they’ve always just clicked. Bobby is the little bit of shy to Bart’s little bit of wild child. And they’re both, quite obviously, so very handsome.

We’re stumped as to what keeps happening for these perfect boys from having a false start at happily ever after. They just haven’t found the right fit yet. We’re hopeful this is a Goldilocks situations and “just right” is around the corner.

Elysian is a fluffy 2-year-old girl with a heart of gold and enough floof to qualify as her own weather system. Breathtakingly beautiful with her dreamy face and magnificent pantaloons, she looks a little like an ethereal creature who wandered out of a fairytale. Her foster family, however, occasionally sees more of an abominable snowman resemblance. Both can be true.

Elysian is a total sweetie with a calm, gentle nature. She takes just a little time to warm up to new people, but once she feels comfortable, her spunky little personality starts to emerge. She loves to play, especially with her sister Vesper, and frequently shows off those floofy pantaloons with some impressively big stretchies. She’s snuggly, affectionate, and will even occasionally let you hold her like a baby. And really, Elysian is very baby.

Her interests are surprisingly sophisticated for such a fluffy little creature. Elysian has developed a fascination with the television and is particularly invested in true crime documentaries, with the occasional cartoon thrown in for balance. Screen time will absolutely need to be worked into her forever family’s routine.

Elysian has blossomed beautifully in her foster home and continues to show that there’s a whole lot of personality underneath all that fur. She would love a feline friend in her forever home and would likely fit right in with a friendly resident kitty. If you happen to be looking for two, her equally fluffy sister Vesper is also adoptable, and together they would make a pretty spectacular pair of floofy besties for life.

“They will always be our family and if for any reason you can’t keep them, they can always come back to us.” We tell every adopter this from the beginning, hoping that day never comes. It can feel unnatural to discuss returning a cat during such a happy time, but we’d rather adopters remember they have a supportive community to fall back on than the alternative.

Morning Star was adopted with her brother as kittens 4 years ago. They were best friends who found the perfect family as a bonded pair. We envisioned them growing up together, always having each other. Unfortunately, every adoption doesn’t turn out how we plan.

A couple of weeks ago, Morning Star’s family reached out because her temperament had completely changed over several months following a move. She no longer enjoyed being pet, was often hiding, and had become aggressive toward her brother. Unfortunately, she had not seen a veterinarian. The family tried separating and reintroducing them, but each attempt failed.

While we never want a cat’s world turned upside down, sometimes returning to rescue is the second chance they need. Morning Star saw our vet team immediately after her return and fortunately, there were no immediate medical concerns. She was prescribed medication for anxiety and is decompressing in a foster home. It’s clear she is sad, confused, and likely misses her family, but she’s getting better every day.

The number of requests we receive to intake owner surrenders is astounding and has grown exponentially in recent years. We wish we could help every cat facing the uncertainty of a family that can no longer keep them, but it’s impossible. Having space to welcome one of our own back home, however, is non-negotiable. It’s why we must be responsible with every other intake decision. The possibility of a cat needing to return is always there, and quite frankly, it keeps us up at night. The what if.

Morning Star is showing more of her adorable personality. We know this beautiful girl will eventually be ready for a second chance at forever. For now, she is exactly where she belongs, getting exactly what she needs, and for that, we are grateful. 🌟
