Join us for our May Progam: “A Part of Our Fabric:
The History and Issues Related to Alexandria’s Immigrant Population”

Agenda:Alexandria, the city’s premier organization dedicated to examining local issues from a variety of viewpoints, will be focusing on a variety of issues related to immigration in Alexandria.

Date: Monday, May 18, 2026
Time: Reception at 6:30 pm; Program Begins Promptly at 7:00 pm
Location: The Forum, Minnie Howard Campus, 3775 W. Braddock Rd., Alexandria, VA 22302

Alexandria’s story is one of movement, resilience, and renewal. This engaging panel discussion explores the many waves of immigration that have shaped the city—from the migration of formerly enslaved individuals following the Civil War, to the arrival of Salvadoran and Ethiopian communities fleeing conflict, to the more recent resettlement of Afghan families.
Panelists will examine how these communities have influenced Alexandria’s cultural identity, economic growth, and public institutions. The program will also highlight the expanding role of the International Academy at Alexandria High School, the network of local resources supporting immigrant families, and the evolving relationship between local law enforcement and federal immigration policies.
Join us for a thoughtful program about how immigration continues to shape Alexandria’s past, present, and future.
The panel members will be announced soon. Please mark your calendars now to attend this event.

Attendees can submit early questions to: [email protected]

Because of the snowstorm and the resultant closing of the school building (where the meeting was to take place), the Agenda:Alexandria event “Housing in Alexandria: Are There Solutions That We Can Agree on?” has been postponed to March 23 (the next scheduled date for an Agenda:Alexandria panel discussion).
The Board of Agenda:Alexandria did not make this decision lightly. The facility's unavailability left us with a difficult choice. For the convenience and safety of all concerned, moving the meeting to our March time block was the best alternative.
Additional announcements will follow as we get closer to that date.

Agenda Alexandria’s Nov. 24th event on aging drew our biggest audience of the season so far. Rod Kuckro moderated a great panel with:

· Mary Lee Anderson, Executive Director, Senior Services of Alexandria

· Heidi Travis, Certified Care Manager, Executive Director, ElderTree Care Management

· Chris Leighton, Attorney in Family Estate issues, Powers of Attorney, Probate Law, etc.

· Larry Lipman, Fmr. Pres. of National Press Club, AARP Virginia Speakers Bureau, Speaker on Tech Scams

We got a lot of valuable information and hope it serves as a kickstart for everyone still needing to get ducks in a row and start some serious planning. Many thanks to our panel, our video and sound tech -- Dave of Del Ray, and to our team of volunteers who pulled the evening together. The program was videotaped and will be available on our website soon. www.AgendaAlexandria.org

We hope you can attend Agenda:Alexandria’s next panel discussion that focuses on aging well on Monday, Nov. 24, 2025 in the easily-accessible The Forum room on the Minnie Howard Campus (3775 W. Braddock Road, Alexandria, VA 22304). The traditional pre-program reception begins at 6:30 p.m. and the program begins promptly at 7:00 pm and will last approximately 90 minutes.

The moderated panel will address the many challenges of aging in Alexandria; it will address a wide variety of potential issues posed to those who are aging — and their families. They will discuss many of the expected and unexpected issues that arise and often surprise those finding themselves dealing with planning for caregiving, legal planning, and digital safety — none of which are easy to solve.

Now is the time to start thinking about those issues, and perhaps to start laying groundwork and clarifying expectations for loved ones. Our goal isn’t to alarm you but to empower you – offering families clear guidance long before life’s curveballs arrive. Whether you are planning for yourself or a family member, you’ll want to attend.

Former Agenda:Alexandria Chair Rod Kuckro will moderate the discussion with a panel composed of:

Mary Lee Anderson, Executive Director, Senior Services of Alexandria
Heidi Travis, Certified Care Manager, Executive Director, ElderTree Care Management
Chris Leighton, Attorney in Family Estate issues, Powers of Attorney, Probate Law, etc.
Larry Lipman, Fmr. Pres. of National Press Club, AARP Virginia Speakers Bureau, Speaker on Tech Scams

Agenda:Alexandria is a non-partisan 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Membership is available for an annual fee. Non-member attendance cost is $10. The program will be videotaped for later viewing on Agenda:Alexandria’s website, www.AgendaAlexandria.org .

Unlike its beginnings as a bustling seaport town, Alexandria today is a small bedroom community within a large metropolitan region. Alexandria’s historic sites, its waterfront, and proximity to Washington DC, make it a prime choice for those who live or work in the DMV. As a result, there is a great deal of demand for housing and development. The large areas envisioned for intensive development are along the Eisenhower Avenue corridor, the former Power Plant site on the waterfront, Potomac Yards, and large portions of the West End. How many people will live, work, and visit within 15 square miles?

On this 275th birthday of the City of Alexandria, it’s a great time to look back at how Alexandria has changed over the centuries and what’s on the horizon for its 300th birthday in 2049.. In October, Agenda: Alexandria will take a look forward to the Alexandria of the next generation. The discussion is based on the neighborhood development plans in place today; most city plans span the next 25 years. As these plans are realized, we ask, “What will Alexandria be like and look like in 2049? What will stay, what will be new, and what will be gone? How might it change?”

Join us Monday, October 28th, at 7:00 pm at the George Washington Masonic Temple.
